Job Description

PPG Aerospace has a job opening for a Material Scientist/ Physicist/Engineer in our Defense Products Group also referred to as CDP. As a Material Scientist/ Physicist, you will be a key contributor in resolving coatings issues across the various product platforms in manufacturing coating processes, equipment. This position is located onsite in our Sylmar, CA. facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform quality control testing in accordance with established company specifications and ASTM procedures and/or other accepted methods
  • Initiate and execute the scientific research and development projects that are critical for PPG Aerospace Transparencies
  • Establish a continuum between S&T and manufacturing in the critical support of launching and developing new technologies into production.
  • Follows standard operating procedures of lab functions and equipment
  • Provide continuous improvement for the department’s environmental, health and safety, quality and value performance to ensure an injury-free workplace 100% compliance to customer satisfaction while meeting plant profitability objectives
  • Ability to present ideas and results in effective technical presentations, write technical papers, and contribute to research proposals for internal and external customers (govt. CRADA’s, joints, research, etc.)
  • Maintain sensitive technical equipment per written standards and procedures with excellent laboratory practices
  • Production support such as trouble shooting of issues encountered in manufacturing for metallic coatings
  • Ensure documentation, and data accuracy; maintain a system of quality documents, and records. Write procedures/reports, input data into computer database/SharePoint, maintain a laboratory notebook, and generate test records
  • Generates ideas and be an integral component in developing patentable technology
  • Investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles of inorganic coatings to commercial and military transparencies
  • Analyze materials and processes (if appropriate) regarding product problems and failures
  • Participate in safety, quality, and value improvement teams, attend, and contribute to several ongoing activities such as manufacturing planning, budget preparation, and departmental IT planning Salary Range $70,700-$120,000

Qualifications:

  • Technical expertise in physical vapor and chemical solution deposition is desired.
  • Knowledge of six sigma and its application in design and resolving existing issues
  • Experience in materials characterization using SEM, AFM, NVIS, FTIR, tensile testing, hardness, etc.
  • Thorough understanding of maintaining safety in the lab. environment and acquainted with 6S process throughout the factory.
  • Capable of instrument ownership, training, and maintenance.
  • Have a Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related science/engineering field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively and energetically both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Have skills in coating characterization tools such as XRD, XPS, SEM, EDS, AFM, and p-static measurement tools.
