Job Description

Job Title - Manufacturing Automation Engineer

Location - Dover, New Hampshire, United States


Essential Tasks:

  • Collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary team to see customer projects through the product life cycle process, including new product introduction (R&D) and production support (PD).
  • Be able to effectively communicate with both internal and external points of contact, addressing technical needs promptly and follow through on commitments.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers and technicians & lead by example
  • Work together with the project team and the Customer (as necessary) to conceive, design, and develop new products and processes via innovative solutions.
  • Integrate technology and custom automation into new or existing manufacturing processes to improve safety, quality, reduce cost and increase throughput; while ensuring all product design specifications are met.
  • Conducts research and development of new cutting-edge automation concepts.
  • Will be responsible for the design and manufacture of automated manufacturing systems for thin high-performance thermoplastics.
  • Initiate capital equipment projects including justification, selection of necessary equipment or design, requisition and implementation.
  • Design and lead experiments to confirm/uncover or resolve design questions
  • Other miscellaneous tasks as may be assigned from time to time
  • Generate supporting technical documentation including detailed drawings, bill of materials, functional specifications, work instructions and controlled software.
  • Troubleshooting of complex automation system issues to discover root cause and implement permanent solutions
  • Support product qualification processes, eventually leading to release to high-rate manufacturing
  • Assemble, test, and troubleshoot automated manufacturing equipment and systems.

Requirements:

  • Understanding of machine design, simple electrical design, and understanding of common manufacturing practices
  • Specification of automation hardware and software
  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in an Engineering (or Engineering Technology) field
  • Familiarity with commonly used engineering systems, methods of analysis, and business tools
  • Knowledge of drawing standards (geometric tolerancing, etc.)
  • Proficient in SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used in plastic part fabrication
  • Robotics or Mechanical Engineering is preferred, but other disciplines will also be considered
  • At least 5 - 15 years of demonstrated engineering experience
  • Knowledge and experience in manufacturing automation
  • Working knowledge of control system design, PLC and HMI programming and Robotics
  • Experience with CNC machining and/or manual machining desired but not required
  • Proficient computer skills; Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. with the ability to learn new ones
  • Documentation systems; Change orders, writing specs, quality systems, ISO requirements
  • Some knowledge of plastic part fabrication techniques (common forming/sealing methods & equipment), thermoforming is particularly valuable

  • Knowing when and where to get help or advice when issues become critical or overly complex
  • Able to communicate and work successfully with a variety of people from several functional groups, cultures, and backgrounds

Physical Requirements

  • Able to ascend/descend ladders, stairs, and crouch/kneel (for short periods) to have sufficient visual acuity (with correction if necessary) to see small parts, part defects, and read computer monitors/documentation.
  • Able to lift 30 pounds without help of equipment, but using proper lifting techniques.
  • Able to sit for several hours at a time when performing design work or doing data analysis.
  • Able to work in conditions of high heat and humidity for several hours at a time.
