Job Description
Tool room support for manual machining, jig grinding, and die maintenance under the tool room manager. Great opportunity to learn or work independently depending on skill level. Must have some die knowledge and be hands on.
TITLE: TOOL & DIE MAKER DEPARTMENT: TOOL ROOM
REPORTS TO: TOOL ROOM MANAGER STATUS: NON-EXEMPT
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Tool & Die Maker is responsible for making and repairing tools, dies, and fixtures for continuous run punch press and related metal fabricating machines. May be assigned to work on lathes, mills, etc. as required and work in a specific tool room capacity and/or provide back up to other tool room personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Receive work orders, engineering drawings or blueprints.
2. Operate various machine tools to build dies, construct fixtures, fabricate prototypes and machine close tolerance metal parts. May make recommendations about design of part.
3. Receive dies. Check and inspect die for damage. Evaluate problems and implement immediate solutions to reduce problem recurrence. Use hand and power tools to disassemble die for cleaning and repair. Wipe and clean die. Perform routine and complex repairs.
4. Set up and operate various machine tools to make or repair tools, dies, fixtures and to sharpen tools. Perform setup and operation of grinders, drills, mills, lathes and various hand tools. Plan sequence of operations and perform one or more setups to accomplish required machining operations.
5. Check blueprint and die specifications. Use micrometer, calipers, and fixed or adjustable gauges as needed to insure that repairs meet specified tolerances.
6. Operate die lifter, lift truck, overhead or jib crane, and related material handling equipment to lift, move, and handle die. Lift, move and handle items using safe lifting techniques.
7. Perform routine operator maintenance to machines. Troubleshoot production lines, dies and other mechanical tooling. Lubricate machine, check oil levels, grease fittings, wipe spills, clear away scrap or trash.
8. Observe safety standards, follow safety rules, wear specified personal protective equipment. Maintain neat work area. Participate in safety activities.
9. Maintain records related to die operations, quality, etc. Review records, notify superior, or take corrective action to maintain quality and production standards.
10. May train or instruct others on machining techniques, die maintenance, or repair.
11. May be assigned predominately to one area such as sensor, die repair, prototyping, etc.
12. Recommends improvements. Participates in training. Performs other tasks as requested.
13. Recommends revisions to customer designs to accommodate existing tooling.
14. Maintains inventory levels of spare die components and other required supplies.
15. Timely and accurate completion of all paperwork associated with position.
16. Comply with all company policies and procedures in including safety and attendance requirements.
17. Participate in activities to increase personal skill level, overall departmental processes and product quality.
18. Resolve day-to-day issues by working effectively with others.
19. Other duties required to meet company needs as assigned by supervisor.
MINIMUM SKILLS & ABILITIES
1. Requires between four and five years of trade school, vocational education, related work experience or apprenticeship in manufacturing environment.
2. OSHA required training in Lock-out / Tag-out, Hazard Communication, PPE and Emergency Evacuation.
3. Ability to use a variety of Lathes, drill presses, and equipment including finishing equipment, air hose, hoists, wrenches, tool-holders, vices, forklift and other types of lifting equipment, etc.
4. Read and understand Blue Prints, Piece Prints, GDT and SPC.
5. Advanced Math skills including calculation of feeds, speeds and distances, print conversion and geometry.
6. Understand and use a variety of measuring equipment (calipers, micrometers, thread gauges, etc.)
7. Write, edit and use CNC computer programs and control panels.
8. Distinguish a variety of raw materials (stainless steel, cold rolled steel, etc.)
9. Understand machining, cutting, stamping and forming properties of various raw materials (303SSTv. 304SST)
10. Good communication skills including the ability to receive and give oral and written instruction.
11. The ability to interface with customers, management, suppliers, and other employees
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. 20/40 vision required with or without correction.
2. Use of hands 100% of the workday.
3. Ability to stand and or walk 100% of the workday.
4. Ability to exert physical force to push, pull, lift or carry 70 pounds frequently by one's self.
5. Ability to work in shop environment - continuous exposure to potentially hazardous metal working machinery and equipment, loud noises, dust, mist, oils and solvents.
