Job Description

Korn Ferry has partnered with our client on their search for the role, Managing Director of Investments.


The Managing Director of Investments will be responsible for the evaluating the University’s investment advisory firm, conducting due diligence, recommending strategies, and monitoring of the Endowment. Reporting to the CIO, the Director will take a lead role in sourcing opportunities, evaluating, and monitoring external managers, and will participate in decisions related to asset allocation, portfolio construction, and risk management.


  • Articulating and defending opinions backed by rigorous analysis through both oral and written communication
  • Collaborating on asset allocation decisions and sharing investment knowledge as well as economic and market information gained from regular interaction with managers
  • Work closely with the CIO/CFO to review, evaluate, recommend and modify strategic asset allocations, as well as tactical adjustments to the portfolio within the approved IPS.
  • Remaining current on new managers and developing trends by attending conferences, annual meetings and building and maintaining a well-developed network of contacts within the investment community
  • Maintaining a recommended pipeline of investment opportunities that will provide a strategic advantage to the University endowment.
  • Evaluate advisor and sub-advisor fees and make recommendations
  • Evaluate other University endowment structures, perform benefit/cost analysis and make recommendations
  • Develop and recommend short term conservative cash strategies
  • Assist finance in evaluating NAVs for financial reporting purposes including benchmarking and back testing.
  • Maintaining a network with the outside investment community to expand knowledge regarding investment opportunities and to serve as references
  • Prepare and present recommendations regarding new investment opportunities and asset class updates to the CIO/CFO, as well as presenting regularly to the Investment Committee
  • Working with the team to conduct private markets investment portfolio analytics and liquidity projections
  • Monitor performance, portfolio positions, current events, and organizational changes of existing fund managers and completing analytical reviews to evaluate the performance of each fund manager on a regular basis.
  • Maintain a network with the outside investment community to expand office knowledge regarding investment opportunities.
  • Conducting or participating in thorough due diligence on the most compelling prospective opportunities recommendations including analysis of investment strategy, process, organization, realized and unrealized portfolio positions, and performance.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Treasury and Investment Staff assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

  • Established network of investment contacts and GP relationships; ability to access independent network for manager evaluation and reference checking purposes
  • The highest level of integrity, honesty, and sense of fiduciary duty
  • Proven investor with at least ten years of investment experience with at least five years of experience working at a family office, endowment, foundation, fund of funds, or similar organization allocating capital to external investment managers.
  • Ability to leverage critical thinking, independent judgement and experience to constructively contribute to investment decisions across the portfolio
  • Clear investment philosophy, with the ability to remain intellectually open to new ideas and approaches
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of the University to a variety of business and community customers and associates.
  • Ability to incorporate rigorous qualitative and quantitative analyses in the evaluation of investment strategies, investment processes, and investment performance
  • Strong investment track record through complete market cycle(s)
  • Demonstrated track record of sourcing and investing in private markets managers.
  • CFA/MBA or equivalent graduate degree expected
  • Strong understanding of capital market dynamics, risk, and complex investment strategies
  • Ability to articulate and defend the unique Christian educational mission and vision of The University and its subsidiaries to a wide variety of individuals and groups.
