    DESCRIPTION OF WORK

    DEFINITION: This position performs skilled work in the maintenance of park grounds and facilities.

    REPORTS TO: The Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.


    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    • Mows grass, edges curbs, and removes leaves; removes tree limbs and dead
    trees from parks.
    • Operates mowers, blowers, edgers, and weed-eaters.
    • Picks up supplies needed to perform daily work activities.
    • Installs and maintains flower beds.
    • Maintains tools and equipment.
    • Assists with litter collection and disposal.
    • Assists in the installation of irrigation systems.
    • Applies herbicides and pesticides.
    • Installs, repairs, and maintains fences.
    • Maintains restrooms.
    • Applies fertilizers.

    • Maintains and repairs sports fields.
    • Installs mulch.
    • Plants trees and shrubs.
    • Assists in equipment set-up and break-down for special events.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
    • No experience requirements.
    • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State
    of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

    • Skill in the repair and maintenance of hand tools.
    • Knowledge of safety standards.
    • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of assigned tools and equipment.
    • Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.

    SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

    GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

    COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the work.

    SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of City parks. Success in this position contributes to a well-maintained City park grounds and facilities.

    PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the general public.

    PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, stooping, standing, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

    SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
