Mail Processor/Driver

Permanent – Full Time
Airway Heights Corrections Center (AHCC)
The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Mail Processor at Airway Heights Corrections Center (AHCC).
Airway Heights Corrections Center (AHCC) is a 2000+ bed, male facility located approximately 10 miles west of Spokane. The prison consists of a main facility that houses medium- and long-term minimum-custody offenders. A separate perimeter adjacent to the main facility accommodates a minimum-security unit for offenders with minimum-custody or lower.

The Department of Corrections (DOC), as a partner in the criminal justice system, enhances public safety, administers criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law and provides leadership for the future of corrections in Washington State.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:


  • Publications, books & magazines will be reviewed to ensure that inappropriate material is not present.
  • Complete postage transfer forms and route to appropriate department.
  • Visual scanning of electronic JPay messages and photos and initiating rejections.
  • All money orders and legal mail received will be separated, logged and routed to the appropriate area.
  • Process legal mail and money orders in the appropriate databases/logs. Legal Mail will have the priority in being delivered to the I/I within twenty-four (24) business hours upon reception to the mailroom
  • Route offender kites to the appropriate housing location.
  • Receiving and forwarding mail rejection appeals to the appropriate authority.
  • Process outgoing mail from staff and offenders by utilizing the mail meter machine and the package shipping system.
  • Mailroom operational related paperwork and at times complete incident reports and general initial serious infractions.
  • Initiate “NSF” non-sufficient funds notices to I/I when it is determined that there is not adequate funds to send out a mailing/package.
  • Log property (via database) from the main and MSU prior to shipping items out.
  • Process letters, magazines, newspapers and all other mail coming from the public to staff or incarcerated individuals (I/I). This will include the separation and sorting of the mail to the designated areas.
  • Review all I/I bound mail/letters for content to ensure that the letters are within the set guidelines of policies and operational memorandums and meet penological interests and do not contain contraband, threats and any nefarious activities which will present a threat to the safety and security of the general public and facility.
  • Initiate “Mail Rejection” forms when warranted, ensuring that the form is complete and accurate as to the reason of the rejection and then routed to the incarcerated individual in a timely manner.
  • Database entries, mail rejections, submit appropriate infractions as appropriate
  • Secure written confirmation of the outgoing legal mail logs which are completed by unit staff in the living units.
  • May operate a vehicle/truck to pick-up and deliver mail.
  • Respond to Kiosk messages and kites from I/I along with queries from staff and the public in a professional manner and within DOC Policy 450.100 Mail for Prison Offenders.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:


  • Valid driver's license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
