The Montgomery County Government, Department of General Services (DGS), is looking for an enthusiastic individual to collect, process and deliver mail to multiple County Government locations.
Program Summary
The Department of General Services, Central Duplicating, Imaging, Archiving and Mail Services Program, provides document management through: high-speed photocopying and color copying services; desktop and electronic publishing; bindery; digital imaging; the electronic and physical archiving of County records; as well as U.S. Postal Service and inter-office mail delivery to/from County departments/agencies/offices.
Roles and Responsibilities
The nature of the work involves mail collection, processing, sorting and distribution. An employee in this position will be responsible for making scheduled mail pickups and deliveries, getting in and out of a mail van and performing a variety of activities relating to mail processing requiring extended periods of standing, taking elevators to multiple floors, and walking. The work is largely manual and includes such duties as sorting and bundling mail, operating/maintaining mail processing equipment including automatic mailing machines, computerized accounting system, U.P.S. manifest system, electronic scales, addressing mail, and inserting/folding equipment.
Duties
Examples of duties will include but not be limited to:
- Helping to prepare and check pre-sorted mail, opening improperly addressed mail and rerouting to the appropriate County departments/agencies/offices;
- Charging postage due mail and business reply mail to proper appropriate County departments/agencies/offices;
- Receiving, sorting, bundling, and delivering incoming/outgoing U.S., outside delivery service, and inter-office mail including books, films, records, and certified, registered, and insured mail;
- Operating and performing routine maintenance on a variety of mail processing equipment including but not limited to a six-station inserting and mailing machine, computerized direct addressing and labeling equipment, scales, high-speed tabber, folder/pressure sealer with inserter capability, and x-ray machine;
- Driving a light van to pick up and deliver mail to County departments/agencies/offices and other destinations;
- May arrange for pick-up and delivery of completed print shop jobs with courier services.
- Determining postage costs for domestic and foreign mail;
- Maintaining a daily record of outgoing mail postal charges and information for all registered, certified, and insured mail by County departments/agencies/offices;
- Providing messenger services between County departments/agencies/offices; and
Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a physical, drug and alcohol screen and background investigation prior to appointment.

Montgomery County Ethics Law : Except as provided by law or regulation, the County's "Public Employees" (which does not include employees of the Sheriff's office) are subject to the County's ethics law including the requirements to obtain advanced approval of any outside employment and the prohibitions on certain outside employment. Minimum QualificationsLicense: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.
Preferred CriteriaThere is no Preferred Criteria. All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated Qualified, placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for an interview.
Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:
- Experience operating and performing minor adjustments/repairs on automated mail processing equipment, including but not limited to a six-station inserting and mailing machine, computerized direct addressing and labeling equipment, scales, high-speed tabber, folder/pressure/sealer with inserter capability and x-ray machine;
- Experience sorting and bundling mailed material;
- Experience determining postage costs for domestic and foreign mail; and
- Experience delivering mailed material.
