Job Description

Arizona State University & The Instrument Design & Fabrication machine shop is looking for a full-time, experienced prototype Machinist Sr. to join our research support team. This position requires hands on work in a prototype environment working from concept designs to machine component(s) and assemblies. Machining and inspection of components are a major part of the current range of responsibilities. This position supports all ASU professors and research scientists along with peer institution specialized projects, and occasionally require you work directly with the researcher, their lab managers, doctoral candidates and master degree student specialized projects.

Essential Duties

  • Design and fabricate a wide variety of projects from basic modifications to highly technical research projects and laboratory equipment.
  • Design fixtures, experimental parts and tooling to meet specialized needs of engineering, research and student projects.
  • Apply quality assurance/control methods and procedures for final article inspection of the ongoing projects.
  • Complete ASU required training courses and work with other ASU research support departments.
  • Consult with faculty members, engineers, graduate assistants and advises on feasibility of project.
  • Requisition for materials, supplies, and needed tools.
  • Interact with research institutions and private industry customers to establish design parameters/information.
  • Required capabilities of this position, include but not limited too, programming, setup and operating of cnc machines with little to no oversight.
  • Revise 3D models and drawings based on applicable user requirements.
  • Develop drawings of research and laboratory instruments, parts or equipment from verbal instructions.

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of recent machinist experience in a toolroom environment; OR, Completion of a two-year machine tool technology program and 4 years’ toolroom machinist experience. Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience using a solid modeling to design custom parts and assemblies.
  • Experience with many types of materials, including but not limited too: Aluminum alloys, Brass, Copper, Molybdenum, Nickel, Steel including Stainless Steel, Titanium plus several other exotic alloys along with various plastics and machinable ceramics.
  • Experience in machining fixtures and working with materials other than standard metals and plastics.
  • Experience in working directly with engineers, researchers and students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of related areas of manufacturing such as MIG/TIG welding and mechanical repairs.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, Feature Cam, HSMWorks and other types of CAD/CAM modeling and programming software.
  • Experience with MS Office software.

Working Environment

  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties and use office equipment including a desktop computer.
  • Required to sit or stand for majority of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • The occasional campus assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic and shop equipment in and around research labs and projects.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling including heavy weights such as vises and large plates.
  • Working on site and other campus locations in research laboratories may require working in confined, dusty, oily and poorly lighted areas and may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and dangerous equipment, materials and/or tools which will require safety precautions and/or specific processes to be followed along with required PPE (e.g. gloves, hearing protection, safety glasses, etc.).
  • Regular use of standard machine shop equipment including, but not limited too: milling machines, large machining centers, lathes, grinders and high-powered hand tools which produce metal chips and shavings that have been exposed to various coolants. Large machining centers may require operators to work with overhead bridge crane and/or occasionally inside confined areas to do machine set-ups.
  • Activities are primarily performed in an environmentally controlled machine shop lab setting.
