Job Description

Position begins 2023-2024 school year.
Salary Schedule is based on the 2023-2024 school year. New hires typically begin at Step 1 on the Salary Schedule. The Siuslaw School District allows step credit for years of certified teaching experience.
This is a 10-month/renewable position, that includes benefits of paid medical and leave.

Library Assistant, Classified, 1.0 FTE (7.5 hours per day + 30 min. paid lunch break), Siuslaw High School
SUMMARY: The library assistant works under the supervision of a licensed teacher-librarian and building administrator in maintaining and providing access to the library collection. The library assistant encourages a love of reading among students; maintains a safe, welcoming, and respectful library environment; and works with staff to support student learning.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Strong clerical abilities
  • Technology and computer skills; experience with general computer and office software
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent and be at least 18 years old.
  • Two-year associate degree (AA) or No Child Left Behind (NCLB) certification as required by Oregon law for schools funded by Title I.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Pass required criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications
  • General knowledge or interest in children's or young adult literature
  • Knowledge of library organization and procedures
  • Prior experience working with children and young adults
  • Prior library work experience, training, or coursework
MAINTENANCE OF AND ACCESS TO LIBRARY COLLECTIONS
  • Maintain and communicate building inventory levels of Chromebook devices available for use and needing repairs to the IT group monthly or if stock is needed.
  • Schedule and facilitate the use of library resources and equipment
  • Assist students and staff in the use of Chromebooks or other district-issued device and software.
  • Supervise and train student assistants and provide grade input and attendance; provide training for adult volunteers.
  • Maintain an organized library collection, which includes processing, inventorying, shelving, and repairing materials and resources in accordance with approved district library policies and procedures
  • Circulate library materials, which includes creating overdue notices, preparing reports, managing patron accounts, and finding materials on behalf of patrons
  • Facilitate access to digital resources such as educational subscriptions, online databases, and e-book collections
MAINTENANCE OF AND ACCESS TO LIBRARY COLLECTIONS - CONTINUED
  • Prepares purchase order request form and calculates orders; maintains supplies, may communicate with vendors to resolve problems.
Note: Selecting materials, cataloging, and deselecting materials should be done by or under the supervision of a licensed teacher-librarian.
Support For Student Learning & Other Functions
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain order by monitoring and supervising student behavior within the guidelines of the school's Student Handbook.
  • Support reading engagement activities, which may include read-alouds, book talks, reading promotion programs, book fairs, and displays
  • Identify and gather materials requested by the certified teaching staff to support instruction
  • Guide library patrons in locating and using library materials and related technology
  • Assist with teacher-directed and student-selected learning activities
Professional Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students and the public.
  • Models appropriate professional behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
  • May serve on various building district committees and/or departmental work teams.
  • Maintains satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to organize and maintain efficient time schedule.
  • Ability to perform duties for an extended period of time without direct supervision
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
  • Ability to perform physical duties required by the position
  • Requires the use of computers and office equipment.
  • Involves sitting, walking, bending, kneeling, and climbing a low stepladder.
  • Work is performed in a school environment.
  • Required to lift and position equipment, books and supplies up to 50 lbs.
  • Involves occasional prolonged exposure to visual display terminals.
CONDITIONS: This is a classified 10-month position.
SALARY: Will be determined by terms of the current negotiated agreement. The amount due under the contract will be pro-rated monthly in accordance with district policy.
