**THIS POSITION IS FOR A YOUTH LIBRARIAN**

The Librarian I is an entry professional level. The position works under close professional supervision in a training status in preparation for responsibility for a full librarianship assignment or work under general supervision in the performance of routine professional work.
EXAMINATION PROCESS: Based upon screening of the City application, résumé, and responses to supplemental questions, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process. This process may include, but is not limited to: written examination, panel interview and/or performance examination, which consists of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job-related experience listed below. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.
SELECTION PROCESS: As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.
Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform specific additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Assists the public in making the most effective use of the library; demonstrates and explains library facilities and procedures; provides technical and professional assistance to library patrons including location and selection of reading materials and information; educates patrons in the use of library resources and equipment; answers a variety of questions on library activities; does reference work within the library and by requesting information from available reference services; answers information questions and advises readers on the selection of materials; selects, catalogs, classifies and maintains collection of assigned area of librarianship, such as adult or children's; participates in the administration of a variety of library programs and classes including volunteer and summer youth; develops and coordinates assigned library programs; work with contract personnel for program activities; prepares displays and informational materials; promotes library services and resources through the use of exhibits, tours, outreach and the media; prepares informational handouts for public distribution including calendars and flyers; participates in the preparation of a variety of records and reports; compiles and analyzes data; participates in the development of grant proposals; supervises the collection of branch libraries, selecting, rotating and deleting materials from the collection; evaluates donations for entry into the library collection; operates a major library during an assigned shift; supervises sub-professional staff; cooperates with schools and community groups in the use and improvement of library services; develops and presents library-related workshops; maintains assigned areas of the library in a neat and orderly condition; attends and participates in professional group meetings and workshops; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of library science and performs related work as required.
ALLOCATION FACTORS: Allocation of positions among the classes in the professional Librarian series is based upon the degree of supervision received, the assignment of responsibility for a designated area of professional librarianship, responsibility for supervision and responsibility for professional services for branch libraries, in addition to main library responsibility.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance backgrounds is:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master's Degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association AND professional experience in provision of library services. Supervisory experience desirable. Spanish/English bilingual skills are highly desirable.
LICENSE REQUIRED: Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License may be required.
KNOWLEDGE OF: Professional library practices, principles and materials; library technical services, such as reference and cataloging; modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; and basic math.

ABILITY TO: Perform a full range of professional library work; maintain library-related records; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

PHYSICAL: Strength: Medium - Exert force of 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. Frequently stand or walk, bend, push/pull, twist at the waist, handle, grip, grasp, finger/type, extend neck upward, downward or side to side. Occasionally sit, stoop, crouch, reach above, at or below shoulder level. Rarely crawl, kneel, climb stairs. Vision: visual acuity sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position; average depth perception needed. Hearing: Hearing ability to effectively hear and comprehend oral instructions and communication.

: Work cooperatively and interact appropriately with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public, without exhibiting extreme responses; respond appropriately to criticism from a supervisor; read and comprehend simple material; use simple math and writing skills; understand, remember and carry out detailed job instructions; respond quickly to changing priorities; deal with the general public, communicate effectively orally; work under pressure; work within deadlines; Librarian II supervises and trains other workers.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work indoors. Frequently use computer. Rare exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, gases, odors, chemicals, excessive noises, solvents, grease or oil, slippery or uneven walking surfaces; rarely drive vehicles. Frequently work with others; rarely work alone (depending on assignment, may work alone). Position requires working evening and/or weekend hours, and may travel to and attend appropriate Black Gold Library System meetings.
