Description
The Legislative Research Commission is accepting applications for the position of Legislative Proofreader in the Citations Office. This position is nonpartisan in nature and requires the ability to work with neutrality in a politically charged environment.
The Legislative Research Commission provides staff support to the Kentucky General Assembly. The agency offers unique opportunities to people seeking fulfilling, challenging, and rewarding careers. LRC staff members provide diverse services and are united by the common purpose of supporting the branch of government closest to the people.
The individual selected for this position must have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a public service orientation with the ability to maintain a good rapport with LRC staff, state employees, and the public. The individual must be able to work under stress, with the understanding that during legislative sessions and occasionally during the interim period, working significant amounts of overtime will be required.
This is a permanent, full-time position with benefits including health and life insurance; retirement plan; and paid holidays, vacation, and sick days. Compensatory time is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis with prior approval.
Job Duties:
  • Proofread all documents with a keen eye for detail, typographical errors, formatting, and language that might be inflammatory or political.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Assist other staff in making corrections to work products to convey a professional impression on behalf of every legislator.
Desired Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of correct English, writing styles, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Basic knowledge of the legislative process.
  • Ability to understand and uphold the strict confidential nature of legislative work.
  • Ability to uphold expectations of a nonpartisan staff member.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues and explain corrections in materials.
  • Ability to perform in a professional manner and maintain a calm demeanor under intense pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work extended hours a needed.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Office products.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, publishing, or related field supplemented by 3 years in education, journalism, publishing, or related field
