Practising Law Institute ("PLI"), an innovative leader in legal education programs and services, is searching for an on-call editorial professional to fill the role of on-call Legal Proofreader. This position requires a Bachelor's degree as well as previous experience with proofreading and editing within the legal services industry. PLI's client base includes a large array of prestigious law firms, corporations and government agencies.

SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director of Digital Publishing, the Legal Proofreader will support the editorial and production work of the Publishing Department. Each Legal Proofreader will work closely with the department's Legal Editorial, Associate Editorial, and Production teams in the preparation and finalization of manuscript and proof pages for the publication of a variety of legal texts, including treatises, practices guides, answer books, and other new and updated publications for lawyers and related professionals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Formatting: Conform structure of manuscript or proof to in-house style, including front matter, chapter content, and back matter.
- Manuscript Prep/Copyediting/Proofreading: Review and correct manuscript and/or proof for errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and format, including conforming legal citations to Bluebook or other specified legal citation format, checking for inconsistencies, and ensuring that author(s)' and editor(s)' changes are correctly integrated into the final manuscript and/or proof.
- Other tasks, as assigned.
- Check accuracy of legal citations where appropriate.
- Perform other appropriate tasks as requested by management, which may involve research, the gathering of primary legal materials and forms, and editorial and production support.
- Indexing: Update indices to incorporate author and editorial changes.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum of 2-4 years of experience in proofreading legal materials in a corporate, law firm, or legal publishing environment.
- Knowledge of legal citation formats such as Bluebook is required.
- This position requires a Bachelor's degree.
- Working from home with access to high-speed internet is preferred. If not available, the proofreader must be willing to work onsite at PLI's offices for the course of the assignment.
- Rare weekend work during peak production periods may be required.
- A high level of proficiency with MS Word, and Adobe Acrobat is desirable.
- Must be detail-oriented with excellent writing, grammar and spelling skills.
- Comfort performing proofreading and copyediting tasks in digital-only formats is required.
Compensation Range for this position
$23.00 - $25.00 per hour
