Job Description

SUMMARY
Howard Athletics Student-Athlete Support Services is currently accepting applications for the position of Learning Specialist. This is an experienced, full-time position with full benefits. The Learning Specialist is responsible for working individually with student-athletes needing additional assistance with academic strategies for success. S/He will also have advisory responsibilities as well. Student-Athlete Support Services is responsible for providing academic and holistic support for almost 500 student-athletes representing 21 sports throughout the academic year and summer sessions. Howard University sponsors NCAA Division-I sports and is a member of the MEAC and NEC Conferences.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide assigned teams with academic counseling and support by modeling best practices in the areas of study skills and development
  • Work in conjunction with University disability services and counseling services to ensure proper documents and assessment procedures are in place and followed for student-athletes needing and receiving services
  • Assist in the overall planning and presentation of the summer and fall new student-athlete orientation and summer bridge programming
  • Assess, identify, and implement strategies and programs specific to the academic and personal need of the student-athlete
  • Maintain files and data, as appropriate, for institutional reporting purposes
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Work collaboratively with individuals from the athletic and academic communities
  • Design and implement services and interventions based on best practices for student-athletes with learning disabilities and/or academically at-risk
  • Maintain working knowledge of NCAA, MEAC, and University policies, rules, and guidelines related to the position
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to excel in fast-paced work environment
  • 2-3 years experience working with disability services, and/or academically at-risk student populations
  • Strong communication skills, both oral, verbal, and written
  • Ability and willingness to work unconventional hours throughout academic year
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Master’s degree in college student personnel, counseling, education or related discipline
  • Experience advising college students
  • Experience with learning strategies and theories to promote student motivation and skills development
