Job Description
We are looking for an experienced, creative, and approachable Learning Specialist to join our team. This individual would be a key member of the Student Support Team and work closely with the faculty and administrative teams in both divisions. Reporting to the Academic Dean, the Learning Specialist supports students in lower and upper school with learning strategies, organization, and study skills. In addition, they would provide individual instruction as appropriate and serve as a resource for faculty.


The Learning Specialist will need to collaborate with the leadership team in refining the school's learning support framework.


Responsibilities


  • Counsel families on learning support and assessment accommodations.
  • Support teaching staff by offering resources, assistance, advice, and training to enable faculty to better meet the needs of all learners.
  • Assist with the writing of student learning plans (SLPs) that will target pupils’ specific curricular/learning needs.
  • Meet with individual parents as necessary to discuss the progress of their children.
  • Demonstrate knowledge about a range of learning differences, developmental differences, health impairments, test anxiety, and general executive functioning challenges and their impact;
  • Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences to discuss pupil progress with parents, if required.
  • Make regular assessments of student achievement and progress.
  • Coordinate detailed testing of students by outside specialists.
  • Assume an active role in Student Support Team (SST) meetings.
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group support/instruction for students, both in push-in and pull-out environments.
  • Coordinate the use of external tutors and learning specialists.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the twice-exceptionality and the complexities of gifted and talented students who also navigate learning differences;
  • Develop and maintain communication and documentation protocols related to learning support.
  • Read and summarize all neuropsychological evaluations for Lower and Upper School and for Admissions as necessary.
  • Act as the liaison with local school districts and attend IEP meetings as appropriate.
  • Organize and oversee standardized testing in concert with the Admissions and Secondary School Offices.
  • Perform other duties as determined by the Head of School.
  • Report regularly on student achievement and progress.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, admin, and parents.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with legal responsibilities of independent schools related to IEP and 504 plans.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Master’s degree in Special Education or related field. Familiarity with reading assessment and Orton-Gillingham methodology is a plus.
  • Positive attitude, flexible approach, and a sense of humor
  • At least four years of experience as a learning specialist or in a related role. Independent school experience is preferred.
