Union Tank Car Company is seeking applicants to become a new employee at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania to assist in various departments as needed by plant production. The Company’s regulatory, engineering and commercial expertise make UTLX the preferred source of railcars and services for many of its customers. Owned by the Marmon Group and Berkshire Hathaway, UTLX headquarters is in Chicago’s financial district, close to major public transportation hubs. We are looking for 3rd shift Laborers to perform tank car repairs during a Monday-Thursday, 10-hour per day workweek. Starting rate of pay $20.98. You will utilize various equipment and technology including air arc cutting torches, grinding tools, I Pads, etc.

Primary Job Functions

Below is a general description of the essential functions of this job. This is not an exhaustive list and employees in these classifications frequently may be required to perform additional duties. Not all classifications will be required to perform all job functions.

• Maintains area in a neat and orderly manner and reports work hazards.
• Uses a variety of tools and equipment including but not limited to pneumatic and hydraulic tools, jacks, cutting torches, and forklifts proficiently.
• Completes tasks that may include changing gaskets, hoses, valves, repairing piping, and pipe fitting.
• Acts as a safety watch for tank/hopper car entry.
• Assists various plant production personnel and under the direction of skilled labor, performs car repair work involving burning, fitting, grinding, blasting, and painting.

Knowledge and Skills Required

• Have a high school diploma or GED
• Willingness to wear required PPE at all times and always work safely.
• Ability to understand and follow UTLX operating procedures and policies based on safety and field training.
• Dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts.
• Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to demonstrate job related knowledge of measuring devices such as rules.
• Must be able to work effectively and efficiently both as a member of a team and independently.
• Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of weight volume, and other units of measurements.

Environmental Conditions

• Exposed to dirt, fumes, smoke, and heat.
• Physical effort in lifting and carrying materials and attaching rigging devices. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Manual dexterity in operating control levers and buttons.
• Exposed to dirt, fumes, smoke, and heat.
• Moderate physical exertion is required. Positions relatively heavy objects by using a forklift or other mechanical means.
• Work outdoors often and be exposed to the elements.
• Possible exposure to hazardous materials or hazardous waste from leaks or spills of these materials while moving or storing them.
• Some outside work possible minor cuts and bruises. Must exercise caution in operation of equipment in confined areas.
• Some climbing into and out of vehicles, crane cabs, etc.
