About the Opportunity
Job Summary
The
Hughes Lab
at Northeastern University's Coastal Sustainability Institute invites applications for a Lab Technician position located at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, MA. The Lab Technician will work in collaboration with PI Hughes and other lab members on a range of projects, so interested applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with our research. This work focuses on seagrass, salt marsh, oyster, and mangrove ecosystems and falls under the following focal research areas: (1) ecological effects of genetic diversity in marine foundation species; (2) marine eco-evolutionary feedbacks and their restoration implications; (3) socio-ecological effects of changing marine biodiversity.

The Lab Technician should be committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM. They will coordinate laboratory, greenhouse, and field logistics for the Hughes Lab. They should be interested in being trained in new skills and techniques as needed. Driving to field sites in the region (CT, RI, MA, ME) will be expected during the field season. Some degree of remote work is possible, though the majority will be in person.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:
  • Conduct field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments
  • Participate in partner interviews, surveys, and focus groups
  • Conduct standard molecular assays including DNA extractions, PCR, and qPCR
  • Collect, organize, and maintain field, greenhouse, and laboratory data
  • Oversee general lab maintenance and purchasing
  • Help train and coordinate with lab personnel
  • Assist with analysis and visualization of ecological, social, and genetic/genomic data

The position is for two years with the potential for additional. Candidates can start as early as July 2023.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Ecology and Evolution, Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Conservation Science) including hands-on experience in at least some of the areas described in the position summary is required. Applicants must be able to work independently and with others, be curious and willing to learn new skills, and be highly organized. Familiarity with bioinformatics is a plus.
Location
The successful applicant will work at the Northeastern University Marine Science Center in Nahant, MA. Travel to field sites in the region (CT, RI, MA, ME) will also be expected.
