Under supervision of the PH Program Clinical Coordinator, the technical medical associate provides supportive services in the preventive health clinics by assisting with client screening and related laboratory and clinical support tasks.


Client Screening


Provides and confirms completion of the DHEC 1859 (general health history) and DHEC 2638 (reproductive health history) by the client.


Documents age, password, and reason for visit on the DHEC 3212 (clinical encounter form).


Obtains specimens for ordered lab tests and prepares and packages specimens for transport to the lab.


Client Screening Support


Retrieves and prints lab reports for nursing staff to review and delivers reports to medical records for appropriate filing.


Orders and restocks screening support services supplies. Assists other members of the preventive health team with laboratory needs.


Interprets for limited English proficiency clients, if certified through DHEC to interpret.


Laboratory And Related Services Support


Performs routine laboratory and clinical support duties, including, but not limited to, scheduling appointments, client data entry, ordering supplies and educational materials, collating educational packets, etc.


Performs lab controls, cleans, and sterilizes surfaces and instruments, and performs appropriate autoclave maintenance, as indicated.


Attends and participates in all required meetings and training sessions.


Performs other related duties as assigned and emergency response.


Minimum And Additional Requirements


State Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and experience or training within the specific work area.


Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.


Agency Additional Requirements: A high school diploma. Completion of a SC approved certified medical assistant program of study. Maintains current certification. Must be skilled in phlebotomy. Must have current driver's license or ability to obtain transportation. Must be able to reach, bend and stoop. Must be able to lift 30 pounds and stand for long periods.


Proficient with computers. Thorough knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory procedures to include phlebotomy. Proficient at obtaining measurements to include height, weight, and blood pressure. Ability to manage supplies and materials for clinic operations. Proficient at working on a team to include communication skills and problem-solving skills.


May be required to use personal vehicle if state car not available. Travel may be required to multiple community and/or clinic locations. May be required to work late (after 5pm) or early (before 8:30am) and/or work Saturday clinics.

Immunizations: All new employees who are healthcare providers are required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Pertussis, Varicella and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.


State Disaster Plan: In accordance with the State's Disaster Plan, which includes hazardous weather, DHEC employees may be required to work in times of an emergency or disaster.


Driving Record: If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver's license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.
