Job Description

The Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University is seeking a lab manager to support, manage and facilitate activities in the research lab of Dr Gary Steinberg. The focus of the lab is to understand the mechanisms of brain repair after stroke, with the long-term goal of finding novel treatments for stroke. We use rodent models of stroke, rodent behavior testing, optogenetics, stem cell transplants, various imaging techniques, and routine molecular and cell biology techniques.

We are looking for a lab manager to support the lab so that the research can be done efficiently and safely. This role requires a great team player with strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills, who is highly organized, and has keen attention to detail.

The main roles of the lab manager are listed, but not limited, to those shown below. We expect the lab manager to consider these roles as a guideline and optimize them to facilitate the work of the entire lab and personnel. Some research opportunity may be available depending on the candidate’s research experience.

Duties include:

  • Assist with bench work as needed.
  • Manage email list and scheduling for Journal Club and Individual Meetings with PI
  • Manage Accounts and Budgets. Review expenditure statements and go over them with PI monthly. Interface with accounting department.
  • Ensure the laboratory is kept in an orderly manner.
  • Manage the stocking and inventory of lab consumables and direct daily shipping/receiving operations. Includes ordering and setting up POs.
  • Administer health and safety programs and ensure safety compliance; act as resource on safety procedures; provide instruction on routine basis; liaise with school and/or university health and safety office as appropriate.
  • Manage Animal and Biosafety Protocols including keep close track of Restricted Drugs and ensure Use Logs are accurate.
  • Manage training of new lab personnel include safety and lab training.
  • Manage chemical inventory and Hazmat/Biohazard waste disposal.
  • Maintain lab equipment in working order including negotiating and managing service contracts with vendors, and tracking and scheduling routine periodic maintenance.
  • Manage internal and external audits and safety inspections (e.g. prepare and be present for annual inspections by APLAC, Fire Marshall, County Haz Mat , Dept of Agriculture and Biohazard Panel)
  • - Other duties may also be assigned

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Good knowledge of computer hardware/software tools.
  • Minimum 2 years research and/or lab management experience preferable.
  • General background in a discipline related to the work of specific lab.
  • Strong skills in instrument and equipment maintenance particularly qPCR machines, fluorescent and confocal microscopes.
  • Experience with tissue culture, basic molecular biology and cell biology techniques.
  • Experience working with rodents, particularly rodent surgeries.
  • General computer skills.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple budgets.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.
  • Goal- and detail-oriented.
  • Demonstrated lab management experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of academic research facility needs.
  • Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research or teaching setting.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a complex and technical environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May work extended or unusual work hours due to research or project requirements and peak work cycles. After hours on-call availability required.
  • May require work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.
  • Must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, etc.
  • May at times be required to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include, but are not limited to, chemicals, pesticides, and solvents, allergens, blood bourne pathogens.
  • May be exposed to radiation or electromagnetic fields.

The expected pay range for this position is $80,000 to $101,000 per annum/hour.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
