Brief Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Kennel Manager, the kennel supervisor function is to provide leadership, guidance, organization, and monitor the daily kennel operations. He/She may also assume some managerial duties in the absence of the Kennel Manager.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provides information to pet owners on how to look for lost pets.
  • Act as liaison for HCCPHES VPH in maintaining positive working relationships with rescue groups.
  • Other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.
  • Advises veterinary staff when animals show symptoms of disease.
  • Responsible for the daily feeding, watering and care of all animals in the shelter.
  • Responsible for twice-daily observation of animals in quarantine, maintenance of quarantine logs and lab specimen reports.
  • Acts as kennel manager in his/her absence; responsible for supervision of all kennel staff and community service/volunteers.
  • Assists in interviewing and training new employees.
  • Responsible for maintaining kennel sanitation and cleanliness standards in accordance with recommendations from Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Portrays a professional attitude and image at all times.
  • Advises the kennel manager of any changes in equipment, supply, or uniform inventories.
  • Conduct performance appraisals and counseling when needed.
  • Handles complaints in the absence of the kennel supervisor.
  • Adoption – Counsels potential adopters to help the select the right pet. Provides information to adopters to insure a smooth transition for the pet into their new home. Must be able to provide basic animal health care education.
  • Coordinates with veterinary staff to insure the health of adoptable animals.
  • Responsible for compiling daily and weekly kennel reports including kennel count, kennel inventory and euthanasia reports.
  • Assists citizens looking for lost pets.
  • Encourages skills development in direct reports through training and behavior modeling.
  • Supervises personnel in the proper cleaning and animal handling techniques.
  • Advises veterinary staff of any problems with quarantined animals.
  • Develops and maintains skills through continuing education.
  • Assists in putting photos and information on the Internet on each animal in the shelter.
  • Ensures that sick and/or injured animals are separated from healthy ones.
  • Ensures that euthanasia is done in a humane, safe, and lawful manner.
  • Advises the kennel manager of any needed building repairs and/or maintenance.

Requirements

Education
  • High School diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of paid work experience handling animals in an animal hospital, shelter, or related animal facility, including direct experience with animal euthanasia. The ability to work humanely with aggressive, frightened animals.
  • At least one (1) year of supervisory/team lead experience.

Licensure:

  • Must have successfully completed a euthanasia certification course or complete it within 120 days of employment. The certificate must be maintained.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License (TX upon hire)

General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
  • May occasionally be required to work after hours, weekends or holidays.
  • Full-Time | Regular - Exempt
  • Rotating Schedule: 4- ten hour days; 7:30 am – 6:30 pm

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to bend for cleaning cages.
  • May require being able to lift animals 75lbs. Will require long periods of standing.

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
