Position to be filled: Keeper-Ambassador Animals, Terrestrial Department

Posted Date: May 8th, 2023

Closing Date: May 19th, 2023

Anticipated Start Date: July 2023

The Greensboro Science Center (GSC) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the role of a Keeper for the ambassador collection with our Terrestrial Department. This full-time position will report directly to and be supervised by our Curatorial team. The Greensboro Science Center is a 68,000 square-foot AAM accredited science museum as well as a 33,000 square-foot aquarium and also includes our 22-acre zoo.

This Keeper will have primary responsibility over our kookaburras, lapwings, and the ambassador collection, including: a variety of herps, amphibians, invertebrates, and small mammals. This position will also work in a team setting and will occasionally assist with venomous reptiles, Friendly Farm, meerkats, aldabra tortoises, and trumpeter hornbills. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: developing and implementing general husbandry protocols (diets, feeding techniques, cleaning, preventative health, enrichment, etc), exhibit design and remodeling, supervision of students/interns, and public education/interaction. Also, this position will be responsible for implementing training and presentation protocols for ambassador animals with the help of the Training Coordinator, as well as the Education and Volunteer Departments. In addition, all keepers are expected to assist others in the shared responsibilities pertaining to common use areas. Skills associated with this position include strong observation skills, creative thinking, adaptability, ability to communicate effectively, and a strong knowledge of training concepts. We also appreciate a strong work ethic and initiative to grow within this career.

In addition to working with a diverse collection of animals, GSC also offers staff the opportunity to support both local and international conservation projects in the field through our yearly conservation and research grant program. Furthermore, in the next 1-3 years GSC plans to expand by building a biodome and aquatic quarantine facility on premise. Greensboro North Carolina is home to 6 major universities and is close to mountains and the beach. We have big city amenities with a small town feel and an affordable cost of living. It is a great opportunity to become part of a dynamic team!

Keepers work outdoors in diverse weather environments, on varied terrain, and must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Candidates should expect to work a 40-hour work week including weekends and holidays. The salary range for this position will depend on experience and is between $14.42-$17 to be accompanied by a full benefit package including medical, dental and vision insurance, retirement, paid holidays, and annual leave. If interested, please submit a cover letter, resume, and 3 professional references.

Applicants chosen for an interview will be notified by June 15th. Applicants who applied to any previously posted positions must re-submit to this posting to be considered. No phone calls or emails please.
