Under administrative direction of the Director of Juvenile Court Services, assists in organizing, planning, directing, and administering the activities of the Juvenile Detention Center.
- Maintains and reviews records, reports, and complex files.
- Coordinates operational reviews and audits of the facility.
- Supervises detention staff and coordinates detention activities to ensure safe and secure operation for all staff and detainees.
- Provides staff evaluations and reviews.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- Recommends appointment of staff and is responsible for all personnel matters.
- Serves on state and local committees and facilitates internal trainings and meetings.
- Evaluates and assists in designing training manuals and related materials, training classes, and training procedures for the department.
- Establishes and maintains organizational and operational policies and procedures for detention.
- Monitors case progress of detainee’s and coordinates with probation staff on deployment of resources to detained juveniles.
- Critically analyzes operational and programming concerns and develops and initiates programming to be utilized with both detainees and staff.
- Works with detention statistics and computer data.
- Engages in administrative investigations and review of detainee complaints and grievances.
- Maintains records and reports for the administration of county, state, and federal budgets and grants.
- Assists in formulating detention budget and monitors expenditures.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
Experience:
A minimum of six years (6) years of progressively responsible experience in a detention/correction setting or closely related field including experience in a supervisory capacity.
Additional Requirements:
All persons applying for employment with the Juvenile Court must possess integrity, honesty, dependability, accuracy, initiative, good judgement, and courtesy.
Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license without restrictions. U.S. citizen or have legal resident status.
Must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age.
Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation, fingerprinting, criminal history check, psychological examination, urinalysis screening for illicit drugs and driving records check through the Motor Vehicles Division.
May be required to successfully pass a polygraph examination, physical examination, and/or credit check.

- Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
- Filing and recordkeeping.
- Principles and practices of juvenile probation and corrections services.
- Clerical office practices and procedures.
- Current Microsoft Office software.
- Principles of human behavior.
- Research techniques and report writing.

- Organization and adherence to detail.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.

- Observe or monitor objects, data and/or behavior to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Demonstrate proficiency in verbal de-escalation, physical restraints, and defensive techniques.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
- Critically analyze situations, detect problems, observe individual behaviors, and make sound objective decisions to resolve problems.
- Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in an impartial manner.
- Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.

- Work professionally and effectively with co-workers, clients, victims of crime, witnesses, and the general public.
- Adhere to the Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees.
- Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
- Work rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays, nights, and graveyard.
- Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
- Plan, assign, and review work of a group of employees, including coaching/motivating staff and providing feedback to supervisors.
Work Environment:
The work environment is associated with an office and field environment year-round in all weather conditions and includes exposure to loud noise, blood borne pathogens, dust, fumes, mist, and chemicals. This is a highly public position where contact with public may be in challenging situations.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to occasionally lift and carry items up to 50 pounds. Physical ability in the following is required: 1) Forcefully raise arms above head, 2) Perform minor aerobic activity, 3) Stand for up to 2 hours at a time, 4) Engage in balanced movements, 5) Forceful extension of the arms, 6) Ability to bend and fully extend legs. 7) Be able to sustain long periods of bending at the waist and kneeling (application/use of mechanical and physical restraint devices).
