Junior Plant Scientist

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of this role, Junior Plant Scientist are:

• Manage microbiology responsibilities for the Formulation plants working with the Plant Support & Quality Control Lab. This includes but is not limited to auditing microbial results (escalating issues to Quality Department or North America Biosafety Senior Microbiologist to have them perform the release of product), support training analysts to set microbiological tests, performing validations, updating microbiological test methods, maintaining site microbiological training records, and monitoring sanitization practices & procedures in the plants. Drive continuous improvement in all these areas and work with other sites to improve Kansas City Formulations performance.
• Comply with Bayer internal policies, procedures, and operating guidelines that impact Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment. Ensure regulatory restrictions & internal specification limits are observed and followed within the units for the >140 formulations produced;
• Provides leadership by determining quality improvement initiatives by reducing the risk of microbial contamination in products and reducing the frequency of out-of-specification product being produced;
• Support the technical activities required to ensure the successful production of new products, including but not limited to coordination initial production activities, development of plant-specific formulation SOPs & manufacturing documents, troubleshooting, product specification approval, and process optimization;
• Support third party employees who staff the in-plant Quality Control lab 24 hours/day, on weekends, & on holidays;
• Support efforts to ensure acceptable formulation quality of >140 products manufactured within 3 formulation plants. This includes but is not limited to measuring & driving Right the First-Time Key Performance Indicator performance; utilizing root cause analysis, coaching, facilitation, & other techniques to continually improve quality performance & output; establishing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) & manufacturing documents; liaising with Formulation Development, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Specification Office, & other colleagues on a regular basis;

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry, Microbiology, or a closely related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, are required. Cross-cultural competency are strong pluses for this position.
• Minimum of three years of hands-on experience in a chemical R&D and/or chemical operations (Master’s degree a plus;)
• Experience with production is a strong plus;
• Strong technical skills, including the ability to understand all applicable process technology, equipment, unit operations, and control systems are essential;
• Strong leadership skills, including the ability to drive change, influence without authority, and model the Bayer LIFE (Leadership, Integrity, Flexibility, Efficiency) values are vital for success in this role;

Position will be located at the Kansas City, Missouri site.
