This recruitment is being established to obtain a current eligible list for both Full time and Extra-Help vacancies. Extra-Help are not entitled to county benefits and are limited to a maximum of 25 hours per week. Extra-Help pay is $15.95 per hour.
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conducts major cleaning of assigned facilities.
- Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications, strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
- Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
- Notify managers concerning the need for repairs or additions to building operating systems.
- Service, clean, and supply restrooms, empties and cleans waste receptacles.
- Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
- Assists in moving and arranging furniture and equipment.
- Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees. Cleans and maintains furnishings by cleaning, dusting and polishing furniture, woodwork, metal work and cabinets.
- Cleans stairways, hallways, rest rooms, offices, lobbies, ceilings, walls, window shades, light fixtures, interior glass partitions and venetian blinds.
- May operate County vehicles to deliver and pick up supplies, equipment and other items as assigned.
- Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them.
Experience:
Some janitorial experience in a commercial or equivalent environment is preferable.
License:
Possess a valid California driver's license at time of appointment and maintain.
Essential Functions include the ability to:
- Respond appropriately to situations.
- Analyze data, interpret directions, procedures and regulations, and develop appropriate responses.
- Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions and indoor industrial conditions including heat/cold, dust, chemical residues, allergens, odors, and poor ventilation.
- Perform cleaning, waste removal and equipment & furniture moving in County offices.
- Regular attendance is an essential function.
- Occasional walking for extended periods over uneven terrain.
- Occasional exposure to physical and chemical agents.
- Normal dexterity with constant holding, frequent grasping, reaching, repetitive motion and occasional use of hand and shop tools and equipment.
- Perform job duties under stressful conditions.
- Communicate effectively with others in writing, in person and over the telephone.
- Occasional climbing stairs or ladders.
- Frequent sitting or standing for extended periods.
- Driving, pushing/pulling and bending/squatting.
- Frequent use of color perception, hand/eye coordination, reading and/or close up work; occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision.
- Constant use of overall visual capabilities.
- Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and/or County regulations.
- Constant hearing normal speech, hearing/talking on the telephone and in person;
- Occasional overtime, weekend, and holiday assignments
- Provide outstanding customer service.
- Lift and move with help objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
Knowledge of:
- Safe work practices.
- Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Janitorial supplies and cleaning methods.
- Proper use of materials and procedures used for cleaning purposes.
- Proper use of janitorial equipment.
Ability to:
- Work on own initiative without close supervision.
- Clean and care for an assigned area and equipment.
- Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
HOLIDAYS & LEAVES
VACATION
10 days the first 5 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 160 hours), 15 days in the second 5 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 240 hours), and 20 days after 10 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 320 hours).
SICK LEAVE
.0462 hours sick leave for each paid regularly scheduled work hour. 12 days (96 hours per year) with unlimited accumulation. Optional annual buy back of a portion of accumulated sick leave hours upon meeting certain criteria.
HOLIDAYS
Twelve paid holidays annually plus one optional holiday.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE
Three (3) regularly scheduled work days or five (5) days if distance traveled over 500 miles one-way.

HEALTH INSURANCE
Medical Insurance - Merced County offers five Medical Plans and contributes towards employee and dependent premiums. Medical plan availability varies based on bargaining units.

- County pays 100% of the premium for employees and 50% for dependent(s)
- Calendar Year Maximums
- County pays 100% of the premium for employees and 50% for dependent(s)
State Disability Insurance - Benefit based on highest quarter during previous calendar year. Employee pays premium.
LIFE INSURANCE
$10,000 County-paid coverage (Accidental Death and Dismemberment included). Voluntary Term Life and Universal Life Insurance available - premium paid by employee.
RETIREMENT
DEFERRED COMPENSATION
The County offers a 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Employees choose their investment funds and can make pretax contributions to the plan up to the maximum allowable.
EXTRA HELP EMPLOYEES DO NOT QUALIFY FOR COUNTY BENEFITS.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP)
Anthem EAP services provides up to five face-to-face counseling sessions per incident and provides a toll-free "800" hotline available 24/7 for emergencies and crisis intervention. EAP services include counseling services, legal services, financial services and work-life resource services.
