The City of Salem Enterprise Services Department is currently seeking outstanding, highly motivated IT interns. This division is dedicated to keeping technology up and running. The positions will provide support to the Information Technology Help Desk team to help City staff with day-to-day operational issues. What You Will Do


The IT interns will work closely with both a mentor and with senior technical staff to develop both experience and technical skill sets. The IT interns will also contribute to meaningful, real-world projects within a specific IT technical service area.


Additional Information On Job Responsibilities


Application Development – Offers professional application development and support across a broad base of internal and external (community focused) application and data solutions. The intern will work to troubleshoot and debug issues, assist with data migration, and create reporting solutions. Application development internship experience will be hands-on and include design, development, and deployment of web applications.


Desktop and Application Support – Provides skilled support for the City’s computer and desktop application environment. The interns will troubleshoot and repair a variety of office hardware and software technology solutions. Using the City’s hardware and software standards as a reference, the interns will assist in building, validating, and deploying new computers, including installation and setup of custom software. The interns will also provide support for the City’s internal Help Desk system.


Network Infrastructure Support – Supports the City’s enterprise network infrastructure, including network hardware devices, security, and connection management across multiple sites. The interns will assist with analysis, configuration, installation, and maintenance of the City’s network hardware and software environments. The internship experience will be hands-on and include work on elements of the City’s communications and network infrastructure.


Business Analyst – Assists IT and City staff with project management, data and process analysis, and solution research and recommendation. The interns will prepare spreadsheets and reports, create agendas, update project plans, participate in research projects, and help facilitate project meetings. The internship experience will be hands-on and will help to deliver innovative solutions, recommendations, and process improvements throughout the City organization.


What are the minimum qualifications?


  • Must have an Oregon Driver license and a driving record that meets the City of Salem's driving standards (depends on area of assignment).
  • Current standing as a graduate or undergraduate student at a college or university with major course work in computer science, information technology, information systems, software engineering, business, or field related to area of project assignment; and minimum of 6 months of paid, unpaid, or volunteer experience, in the support and development of applications, GIS, computer hardware and desktop support, or analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check and drug test (including marijuana), depending on area of assignment.

  • Any combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions. High school juniors and seniors with experience and knowledge in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network or PC support, or exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills are encouraged to apply.
