Job Description

We are seeking a qualified candidate to join our team as an Investment Officer on the Risk Management Asset Allocation (RMAA) team. The primary objective of the Investment Officer (IO) – Risk Management and Asset Allocation (RMAA) is to assist the Risk Management and Asset Allocation unit in the structuring, organization, and implementation of the investment risk and asset allocation program. The IO contributes to the development and advancement of the investment risk assessment and management activities.


The IO will assist in a variety of unit activities such as cash flow monitoring, portfolio rebalancing, performance analysis, risk monitoring, and asset allocation studies. The IO will be a significant contributor to the evolution of the risk management program, with capabilities to build out tools and reporting for quantitative and qualitative risk assessment, portfolio exposures, and performance analytics.In the building out of tools and reporting, the IO is expected to develop a deep understanding of the roles of the asset classes within the WSIB’s portfolios and the risks that are accepted and discovered as a result of its portfolio construction, market developments, and changes to its cash flow projections over time.


Duties


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Supports the RMAA SIO in cash flow monitoring, rebalancing, performance analysis, risk monitoring, and asset allocation studies.
  • Actively participates in all aspects of the development, implementation, and monitoring of Risk Management and Asset Allocation activities.
  • Recommends overall risk management ideas, tools, research and strategies.


DETAILED RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Participates in the development, implementation, and monitoring of performance attribution and aids in enhancing the investment analytics knowledge and expertise of the agency.
  • Work with SIO on other projects that might be requested by the Board or executive management.
  • Supports the unit in its efforts to analyze quantitative and qualitative risks of various portfolios and asset classes managed by the WSIB.
  • Works with RMAA staff and other teams to monitor cash flow activities, conduct portfolio rebalancing, and produce various reports for RMAA SIO and executive management.
  • Develops risk assessment metrics for adoption in the total portfolio investment management risk program.
  • Evaluates research services, research consultants, data sources, and risk models and makes recommendations to the RMAA SIO.
  • Works with RMAA staff to identify, acquire, deploy, and maintain data sources and systems to facilitate risk measurement and reporting.
  • Performs ad hoc research projects and other duties, as required.
  • Makes recommendations with respect to important aspects of risk monitoring not currently captured in existing risk measurement tools to aid in analyzing risk data.
  • Drafts and recommends improvements to stakeholder presentations and materials as well as periodically present to stakeholder groups.
  • Organizes and complete projects in a timely fashion, with high attention to detail.
  • Conducts strategic asset allocation studies and make related recommendations to stakeholder governing bodies and Board.
  • Proposes new ways to think about and view the portfolios from both a technical and fundamental standpoint.
  • Manages small projects in the cross-functional team environment.


Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, math, engineering, statistics, or a related field, and at least three years of investment experience, preferably in an institutional investment setting; an advanced degree is desirable. CFA and CAIA designations are strong plus.


Excellent analytical skills; ability to research, analyze, synthesize, and apply information and results from financial literature and other sources, including the ability to apply quantitative and empirical research to real world issues in the financial management industry.


Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present concise explanations of complex analyses.


Demonstrated resourcefulness and a commitment to learning.


Strong computer skills with a wide variety of software knowledge and the ability to quickly learn new applications.


Excellent modeling skills strongly preferred.


Familiarity with software from financial data providers (e.g. MSCI, BlackRock, and Bloomberg) desired.


Familiarity with multi asset class asset allocation, performance attribution and benchmarking desired.


Highest sense of integrity – honest and ethical.


Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, establish time frames for projects, and proactively communicate progress toward goals.


Ability to be flexible, respectful, and effective while working with the RMAA team and other teams.


Experience with collaborative, cross-functional teamwork.
