Occ Summary

Perform specialized and complex procedures involv ed in IntraoperativeNeuromonitoring to obtain data for use in the diagno sis of clinicaldisorders of the nervous system.

Work Performed

Level I- Assist the collection and analysis of multiple types of recordings andmeasurements of the electrical activity of the central and/or peripheralnervous system.- Application of extensive knowledge in anatomy and neurophysiologyrelative to the monitoring being performed.- Knowledge and practice of electrical safety relevant to equipment andtyp e of monitoring performed.- Archive data.Level II- Application of extens ive knowledge in neuroanesthesia and its effecton neuromonitoring.- Know ledge and application of current practices in neuromonitoring,maintained through extensive reading of published literature andpractice standards .- Maintenance of continuing education requirements by ABRET to retaincr edentials.- Assessment of intraoperative procedure relative to orders fo rmonitoring, taking action to address deviation from established practic eprotocols.- Performance of duties according to established lab protocol s forpreoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative procedures.- Knowle dge and practice of electrical safetyrelevant to equipment andtype of m onitoring performed.- Archive Data.- Mentor IOM Trainee.Level III- Appli cation of extensive knowledge in neuroanesthesia and its effecton neurom onitoring- Knowledge and application of current practices in neuromonito ring,maintained through extensive reading of published literature andpra ctice standards.- Performance of all duties and responsibilities require d for multi-modality monitoring.- Maintenance of continuing education re quirements by ABRET to retainthe CNIM credential.- Knowledge and practic e of electrical safety relevant to equipment andtype of monitoring perfo rmed.- Assessment of intraoperative procedure relative to orders formoni toring, taking action to address deviation from established practiceprotocols.- Archive Data.- Develop lab protocols for preoperative, intraoper ative, andpostoperative procedures.

Level IAn Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) Trainee develops c ompetency inand performs the basicsof Intraoperative Neuromonitoring t esting andassociated interventions under direct supervision of a IONM Te chnologistor a Certified IONM Technologist, 10 hours of CE, selects 2 c hoice froma list of options for professional growth (e.g., member of nat ionalorganization, committee work).Level IIThe primary responsibility of a Non-Certified IntraoperativeNeuromonitoring (IONM) Technologist is to collect and analyze, or tooversee the collection and analysis of multip le types of recordings andmeasurements of the electrical activity of the central and/or peripheralnervous system.An Intraoperative Neuromonitori ng Technologist can provide supervisionof an Intraoperative Neuromonitor ing Trainee, 12 hours of CE, selects 3choices from a list of options for professional growth.Level IIIThe primary responsibility a Certified Intraoperative Neuromonitoring(IONM) Technologist is to collect and analyze , or to oversee thecollection and analysis of multiple types of recordin gs and measurementsof the electrical activity of the central and/or peri pheral nervoussystem.A Certified Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Technolo gist can providesupervision of an Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Trainee , or Non-Certified Technologist.16 hours of CE, selects 4 choices from a list of options forprofessional growth.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Level I Level II Bachelor's degree in a biological science preferred or an Associates Degree in a biological science required with equivalent number of years of experience as a technician in a health care diagnostic procedure setting to offset a Bachelors Degree. Bachelor's degree in a biological science preferred or an Associates Degree in a biological science required with equivalent number of years of experience as a technician in a health care diagnostic procedure setting to offset a Bachelors Degree. Level III Bachelor's degree in a biological science preferred or an Associates Degree in a biological science required with equivalent number of years of experience as a technician in a health care diagnostic procedure setting to offset a Bachelors Degree.

Experience

Level I Level II With a Bachelors Degree, no experience required. An Associates Degree in a biological science required with 4 years of experience as a technician in a health care diagnostic procedure setting to offset a Bachelors Degree. 1 year experience specifically in intraoperative neuromonitoring, and proof of competency in the following list of modalities in IONM and other specialized procedures as appropriate to hospital practice: somatosensory evoked potentials, spontaneous and evoked electromyography, electroencephalography, and motor evoked potentials. Level III 3 years experience specifically in intraoperative neuromonitoring, with a min. of two years of full-time employment as a non-certified IONM technologist and minimum 6 months of experience in IONM at Duke. Proof of competency in all performed modalities in IONM and other specialized procedures as appropriate to hospital practice. Examples of these procedures include but are not limited to brainstem evoked potentials, monitoring of the placement of deep brain stimulating electrodes, brain function mapping, intracranial grid implantation, trans-cranial Doppler, trans-cranial motor evoked potentials, and direct stimulation of neural structures (brain, spinal cord, cranial and peripheral nerves) to determine identity and functionality intraoperatively.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Level I Level II None. Registry in EEG or Registry in EP by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic & Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) required or Repetitive Nerve Conductions Study Technologist (RNCST) or RET (Canadian EEG registry) required. Level III Certification in neurophysiological intraoperative monitoring (CNIM) by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic & Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) required.
