Job Description
General Summary
The Immunology Intern will be responsible for assisting a senior-level scientist with several projects running ELISA assays for company clients. The intern will get familiar with the basic principal of the assay, learn to plan the assay, conduct the assay, read the plates and write up the data in an appropriate form. Data will always be evaluated for approval by the senior-level scientist.
The Intern will also be introduced to the general workflows of an Immunology lab including sample tracking and general upkeep.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide a foundation of knowledge and skills in plate-based Immunology assay planning and/or development to the next generation of drug discovery scientists.
  • Advance client projects by analyzing samples for specific antibodies/proteins as required by the client.
  • Gain hands-on experience in Lab.
  • Perform other duties as needed and directed by supervisor.
  • Objectives:
  • Assist in various tasks and events stated by learning track.
Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience pipetting
  • Desired: experience using automated equipment
  • Completed course work in biochemistry and general chemistry. Other course work that would be beneficial include pharmacology, cell biology, immunology, and molecular biology.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture
  • Experience performing in vitro assays (desired: plate-based assay experience)
Training Plan
The training plan for the Immunology Intern will consist of several weeks of training followed by demonstration of ability to perform experiments independently. After this period, the intern should be able to perform experiments with a level of independence while still receiving assistance, where needed. The intern will attend Immunology department meetings as well as divisional meetings.
Depending on the level of experience, the training period will vary.
  • Perform experiments under minimal supervision.
  • Meet with different Immunology scientists to learn more about the Immunology Laboratory.
  • Weeks 5 – 9
  • Demonstrate competence for different steps of the experimental process under supervision of senior-level scientist; this will consist of running the experiment(s) with samples of known potency to check agreement with existing results.
  • Week 1
  • Continue training on instrumentation.
  • Assist Immunology staff with lab upkeep.
  • Be introduced the project goals/timelines and assay concept including its contribution to the project goals.
  • Continue observation of experimental process – assist where appropriate.
  • Weeks 3 and 4
  • Observe experimental process.
  • Begin training on assay-relevant instrumentation and data processing tools.
  • Week 2
  • Report out experimental results.

This position is in a laboratory environment and required the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including (but not limited to)
  • Eye protection (Safety glasses and/or full-face shield)
  • Immunizations are required for this position and are determined by the study/agent. Some examples include Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Smallpox, Polio, and Influenza.
  • Tyvek/scrub suits
  • Hearing protection (varies based on tasks)
  • Respirator (varies based on tasks and barrier requirements)
  • Nitrile (or equivalent) gloves (varies based on tasks)
