  • Must participate fully in assigned educational activities, including conferences, rotations, periodic testing, and advisor meetings.
  • Will provide patient care under the supervision of a member of the Internal Medicine faculty or other supervising licensed independent practitioner, as assigned by the Residency Director. The PGY-2 Resident may perform any procedure requiring informed consent that the program faculty have determined the resident is competent to perform and have notified the resident in writing of this determination. However, it remains preferable to have a supervising faculty member is present and the faculty must always be informed and given the opportunity to be present where feasible. Alternatively, a PGY-2 or III resident may supervise the PGY-2 resident, if that resident has previously shown skill in the procedure and has been given authority to do so by the supervising licensed independent practitioner responsible for that patient.
  • Must treat each patient encountered and other personnel involved in care with respect, dignity, and compassion.
  • Must recognize his or her role as a learner. The resident must take each available opportunity to become a more accomplished physician and must exhibit timely attendance at all required educational activities.
  • The resident should perform procedures and patient care activities that supervising licensed independent practitioners allowed them to perform. However, they must not exceed current capabilities and must seek supervision when care demands exceed allowed practice.
  • The resident should seek to enhance and take responsibility for their personal training opportunities. However, the resident must recognize that the content of the required experiences in the program is the responsibility of the faculty, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and the American Board of Internal Medicine.
  • Should effectively function as a member of various teams during all patient care and educational activities assigned.
  • Use good judgment and seek supervision when ordering tests and treatment for patients. The resident is to be cognizant of cost and appropriately limit expenses to patients and the organization and must exhibit behaviors and attitudes that reveal he or she takes responsibility for their actions. However, the resident must recognize that the assigned faculty member, a licensed independent practitioner, is responsible for all patient care decisions and act accordingly.
  • Is to engage in activities, such as the residents support group, that allow a healthy examination of and joyful engagement in the physician’s role. The resident should take full advantage of the resources provided by the program that support a positive attitude towards the practice of medicine. Qualifications: Must have successfully completed PGY1 year in training and possess a medical license from the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure. Know How Job Knowledge: Specify required education, licensure/certification, prior experience, skill, behavior, equipment operation, type and duration of on-the-job training, patient population to be served, etc. Has the ability to rapidly evaluate critical and noncritical patients in both the hospital and ambulatory settings. The resident is proficient at obtaining historical information about patients and performing comprehensive physical examinations. The resident is proficient with a number of procedures germane to the care of internal medicine patients. Understands modalities of treatment for both hospital and ambulatory patients. Incorporates the application of osteopathic manipulative medicine as it relates to the diagnosis and treatment of hospital and ambulatory patients. Understands research methodologies, critical review of the literature, and modalities of accessing medical information. Leadership: Short, specific statements about skills needed in areas of planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating the work that is to be done. Interact in a collegial manner with other physician, nursing, support, and administrative staff. Respect the onions of those in junior or senior positions and follow appropriate hierarchy roles. Be able to lead a team of PGY-1 residents and medical students in effectively caring for inpatients. Human Relations Skills: With whom does the person come into contact and to what degree. The resident comes in contact with the patient, nurses, Providers and patient’s families. Problem Solving Please give examples of the types of major problems encountered and challenges of the job. Perform a complete history and physical. The resident must be able to succinctly and properly present these findings in a logical order to supervising faculty and during dictation of common reports in the hospital and clinic. The resident is expected to be able to see new outpatients requiring a history and physical at an average pace of 40 minutes per patient. Perform a focused history and physical. Perform literature searches and otherwise access information necessary to obtain needed knowledge about patients and advance own knowledge. The resident is expected to be able to prepare presentations to other residents and faculty from the medical literature and Read and reasonably understand medical literature as presented in abridged index medical listed journals. Organize time and effort in a manner that maximizes effective patient care and learning and Possess basic skills in public speaking and computer-based projections as required for presentation of conferences to fellow residents.
