Job Description

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Supervise Center for Faith and Spirituality Student Staff (1.5 FTE).

2. Provide religious programming on campus consistent with the Rooted and Open philosophy of the ELCA colleges and universities, nurturing the Lutheran identity and character of the college as well as students across the Christian spectrum and other faith traditions.

3. Provide programming that supports the College’s goal to attract students, both current and prospective students through the recruitment process and supports the College’s collective efforts to increase the retention and graduation rates of students.

4. Provide programming and service the College at major events (Baccalaureate, Commencement, Homecoming, and other campus events).

5. Provide pastoral counseling to students from all faith traditions.

6. Provide counseling and support to students interested in pursuing religious vocations, regardless of religious affiliation.

7. Provide opportunities for spiritual formation and growth for students.

8. Work cooperatively with several local congregations from multiple faith traditions in line with an ongoing Memorandum of Agreement.

DESCRIPTION OF NONESSENTIAL DUTIES: Serve on miscellaneous and ad hoc committees as appropriate.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises the Assistant to Campus Pastor and the half-time Purposeful Life and Leadership Coordinator. Carries out supervisory duties in accordance with college policies and applicable employment laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.)

  • Education generally equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Divinity.
  • Ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America or generally equivalent ministry preparation and experience.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in parish or campus ministry.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with employees, students, alumni, and faculty members.
  • The ability to use a personal computer and word processing, spreadsheet, and Google software.
  • The ability to use a variety of standard office equipment such as a 10-key calculator, telephone, and computer keyboard.

DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin August 11, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. The desired start date is in time for the beginning of the fall term in late August.

Work is performed in an office environment. The employee must occasionally travel on College business. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
