Required Qualifications:

  • Must be able to perform other physical requirements of the position which include assisting team members with moving donors at various points in the donation process; ability to lift minimum of 50 pounds and ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Experience with embalming
  • BA/BS plus at least 4 years of experience or advanced degree plus 2 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal eight years


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory or leadership experience
  • Current licensure to practice Mortuary Science, funeral director license or embalming license
  • Experience in a professional and sensitive manner within an environment which works with dying, death and bereavement on a daily basis
  • Experience with transplant, non-transplant, whole body anatomical donation, or anatomical procurements
  • Experience with maintaining records and accurately recording information
  • Experience maintaining confidentiality of sensitive or protected related information and program operations
  • General knowledge of anatomy, chemistry and medical terminology
  • Experience managing and prioritizing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and working both independently and as part of a team working in collaboration with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities
  • Experience with databases, word processing and computer applications (i.e. Google Drive, Microsoft Office, Smartsheet)

The Anatomy Bequest Program (ABP) is a program within the University of Minnesota Medical School. Established in 1901, the ABP is a whole body donation program that supports medical education and research throughout the state. This position works with decedents and operates as a HIPAA-covered entity. To learn more about the ABP, visit www.bequest.umn.edu.

This is a newly established position within the ABP and will report to the Lab Manager. The Intake Lead/Embalmer will lead a team of temporary/casual and student employees during the donor intake and embalming processes. The Lead Intake/Embalmer will collaborate with other lab leads, donation coordinators, transplant and research donations partners, funeral directors, and vendors.

This is a 12 month, ongoing position. The working hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday; and occasional hours outside of the routine hours based on program needs. Employees in this position are designated as essential employees in accordance with the University of Minnesota Administrative Policy: Campus and Building Closing.

This position is based on campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager. All UMN employees are expected to follow applicable public health and safety procedures.

Salary Range: $60,000-$65,000, DOQ


Duties/Responsibilites:

70%: Intake and Embalming Operations

  • Maintain ABP lab equipment and spaces
  • Collect and send biological samples for testing at an external laboratory
  • Collaborate with transplant and research donation partners during shared donor scenarios
  • Coordinate operations with vendors
  • Perform preservation techniques including embalming procedures
  • Perform donor preservation and identification checks
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, and ABP and University policies and procedures
  • Coordinate proper storage and tracking of anatomical material throughout the donation process
  • Perform donor intake examinations and other medical acceptability functions
  • Track donor personal effects
  • Perform time-sensitive anatomical procurements


20%: Supervisor and Administrative Management

  • Oversee the intake/embalming operational team
  • Allocate resources and employees based on operational priorities
  • Document training and perform competency evaluations
  • Assist in policy and procedure revision
  • Oversee the daily intake and embalming operations
  • Interview, hire, train, supervise, and conduct performance reviews for direct reports
  • Collaborate with preserved and unpreserved donor leads, and lab manager on overall lab priorities
  • Maintain accurate and updated records


10%: Miscellaneous

  • Assist with team lifting procedures
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Assist with the annual Service of Gratitude
  • Seek innovative approaches to enhance efficiencies, compliance, and safety
  • Attend training events and staff meetings
