Overview:

The CDC Foundation seeks an Infection Preventionist to serve as an active member of the infection control and prevention team. As part of the Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance Section, the Infection Preventionist will provide expertise regarding infection prevention in healthcare settings, with emphasis on assessment, quality improvement initiatives, and preventive practices. The purpose of this work is to strengthen healthcare facility capability to implement evidence-based infection prevention and control practices and mitigate Healthcare Associated Infections in all healthcare settings across the state.

Qualifications:
  • Organizational skills demonstrating high attention to detail and the ability to organize multiple priorities.
  • Requires three years of progressively responsible professional experience in a healthcare or public health organization related to infection prevention and control or patient safety.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, public health, microbiology, or related field.
  • Possesses a valid, current Driver’s License, automobile insurance, and reliable private transport.
  • Familiarity with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Project Firstline curriculum.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities:
  • Communicate investigation updates and public health actions to relevant key stakeholders (i.e., HAI Coordinator, local health department leadership, healthcare facilities).
  • Provide Healthcare Associated Infection prevention tasks as designated by the HAI Coordinator.
  • Document healthcare facility assessment findings in IDPH-approved tracker and provide summary reports to the participating facility and relevant local health department.
  • Performs validation of HAI events reported to National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and supports facilities with surveillance and reporting.
  • Synthesize and summarize recent infection control literature and present latest recommendations, standards, and guidelines.
  • Conduct follow-up assessments to evaluate and support healthcare facility implementation of recommended infection prevention and mitigation measures.
  • Collaborate with other staff and external partners to plan and implement infection prevention and control training for healthcare facilities, local health departments and regional jurisdictions.
  • Assist local health department partners with point prevalence surveys as part of prevention-focused and response-focused efforts.
  • Conduct onsite and remote infection control assessments (ICARs) at healthcare facilities to review infection prevention and control policies and procedures and provide feedback and technical assistance. Facility selection will be based on review of data and identified gaps.
  • Provide public health expertise on Healthcare Associated Infections outbreak investigations associated with healthcare facilities.
  • Conduct assessments to include a review of healthcare facility’s infection prevention plans, risk assessments, surveillance capacity, and ability to respond to high-risk pathogens.

Roles and responsibilities listed above may be expanded upon or updated to match priorities and needs, once written approval is received by both the CDC Foundation and the Illinois Department of Public Health, in order to best support the State of Illinois in their public health programming.

This position requires the regular operation of a motor vehicle during the course and scope of employment as an essential function of the job. As such, Employees in this position must possess and maintain a valid driver's license in their state of residence, must self-report motor vehicle violations/convictions, and must provide proof of acceptable insurance coverage with mandatory minimum coverages as set forth within the Driver Safety Motor Vehicle Policy (“Policy”).
