Job Description

Duties

  • You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations individually or as part of a team.
  • You will evaluate the need for quantitative assessment of air contamination; noise and other physical stressors as well as the quantitative assessment of ventilation systems.
  • You will document shops, processes, Similar Exposure Groups (SEG), and samples in the DoD designated DOEHRS-IH database.
  • You will research the chemical and toxicological literature, develop and/or recommend individualized methods and approaches to obtain a valid and complete evaluation.
  • You will maintain, calibrate, and select appropriate equipment and media and conducts or oversees sampling.
  • You will conduct and document SEG exposure assessments in the DOEHRS-IH database.
  • You will maintain other data and metrics necessary to document work accomplished and perform program assessments.
  • Will prepare written workplace monitoring plans and tracks their completion, updating the plans as necessary.
  • You will assess work practices to identify the population at risk and to detect violations of published health standards (e.g. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, DoD and DoN Directives).

  • Certification in comprehensive practice by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) is highly desired.
  • Certain incentives (such as Recruitment, Relocation or Student Loan Repayment) may be authorized to eligible selectees.
  • Selectee will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • A favorable Tier 3 background investigation is required for all Non-Critical Sensitive (NCS) positions with access to network systems and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH).
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health Sciences, Occupational and Environmental Health, Toxicology, Safety Sciences, or related science should included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry and that was accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
For GS-11 - In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements - to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position such as:
  • Using automated data systems/applications, (i.e. Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System - Industrial Hygiene (DOEHRS-IH), MS Office Suite software or similar databases), to write technical reports and/or maintain data and metrics necessary to document work accomplished and perform program assessments;
  • Planning and carrying out inspections, handling problems in accordance with established office policies, previous training and accepted practices;
  • Researching chemical and toxicological literature to develop and/or recommend individualized methods and approaches to obtain a valid and complete evaluation).
  • Applying industrial hygiene sampling techniques and instrumentation, to include evaluating /reviewing the results of sampling performed by themselves, other Industrial Hygienists or Industrial Hygiene Technicians to statistically determine if occupational exposures are in excess of published health standards (including professionally conceived standards); and

For GS-12 - In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements - to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position such as:
  • Investigating health problems which arise among workers to determine probable cause and to recommend measures to minimize health hazards.
  • Recognizing and evaluating occupational health hazards, including those for which the nature and extent of hazard is not completely understood;
  • Evaluating proposed new work processes and/or materials and or recommend measures to minimize health hazards; and
  • Devising a variety of control measures, including ventilation, shielding, material substitution, change in work procedures, isolation, education, personal protective devices;
  • Applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles and practices applicable to planning and carrying out all industrial hygiene programs established organizations/agencies, (i.e. Navy and Marine Corps), activities concerned with a wide variety of industrial sites and research laboratories;

Evaluation of Education


All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.
