What to Expect

The Role

Tesla is currently seeking a motivated and accomplished Industrial Engineer who will be the owner of Material Flow initiatives for production. The position will be based in Lathrop site of Tesla.

The ideal candidate will excel in a demanding and fast-paced environment where they will work as part of a strong, agile, and highly motivated team to accomplish some of the most ambitious projects being attempted in any industry today. Candidate takes pride in thier thoroughness, analytical ability, organizational skills and attention to detail. The candidate will be able to think at a systems level about ambiguous problems and use strong logic and computation to develop material flow and layout strategies. A successful applicant will have the ability to quantify ambiguous problems to drive data-based decisions.

The team is responsible for sustaining, ramping and improving business critical new product lines through collaboration with production, packaging engineering and development, material flow design, supply chain, construction and facilities teams. Innovation and grit are expected. Through a detailed understanding of sales and demand planning objectives and extensive collaboration with internal and external teams developing individual components, this teams ensures that the overall material flow requirement achieves all of Tesla’s objectives.


What You’ll Do

Responsibilities

Display a positive attitude and practice strong work ethics that reflects the mission, philosophy and goals of Tesla.

Layout

Provide feedback on the design and optimize site layouts for production, material flow, construction, and facilities.

Work with internal operations and material flow engineering teams to ensure that equipment and layout designs align with the overall material flow plan and vision for the factory

Create layouts for dock staging areas, logistics/rail yards, and warehouses.

Material Flow Equipment

Develop RFQs

Develop equipment specifications and requirements based on product constraints

Provide design layouts and equipment solutions

Conduct equipment design reviews and provide design guidance to vendors.

Manage equipment suppliers through all phases of projects.

Prepare cost estimates and budget requests for senior management approval

Technical project management and implementation

Material Flow Systems and Process

Collaborate with site operations, supply chain and engineering teams to design internal and external warehousing and PFEP

Partner with Analytics teams to derive KPIs for connected material flow systems

Develop models for inventory growth and optimization as the product ramps

Develop and sustain parts flow within the factory using Tesla’s internal Material Flow Systems

What You’ll Bring

Requirements

  • Experience quantitatively solving ambiguous problems at a systems level.
  • Extensive experience with Excel (VBA a plus).
  • Experience with Catia, Solidworks, Sketchup
  • Significant AutoCAD expertise
  • Experience with discrete event simulation software (ARENA, FlexSim, etc)
  • Experience with automated material flow/warehouse equipment design and/or implementation.
  • Experience with layouts in AutoCAD.
  • BS or MS Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and/or equivalent experience.
  • Experience designing greenfield facility layouts and/or material flow
  • Extensive detailed analysis experience to make data-driven decisions and summarize results for executives.
  • 5+ years of industrial, manufacturing, or mechanical engineering experience with emphasis on layout and material flow
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to drive projects with diverse teams in a manufacturing environment.
