Hunger and Homeless Commission Member

Position: Hunger and Homeless Commission Member (3350)

Duration: 2 Years Meetings: Monthly Wednesdays at 12pm in the Mayor’s Reception Room

SUMMARY

The Lowell Hunger and Homeless Commission is comprised of up to eleven (15) members appointed by the City Manager, and serves as an advisor to the City on issues regarding hunger and homelessness. The Hunger Homeless Commission meets in the Mayor’s Reception Room on the 1st Wednesday of the month at 12:00 PM. Meetings may also be held by remote participation via Zoom.

All Commission members shall believe in and support the special interests of the hungry and homeless and must have a willingness to work on behalf of the City of Lowell in this endeavor.

Commission members shall be Lowell residents or non-residents affiliated with a City organization or institution. The Commission elects a chair, vice-chair and other officers on an annual basis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

? Attend regular monthly Commission meetings held on the first Wednesday of every month at 12:00pm (meetings are approximately 60-90 minutes).

? May participate on sub-committees, attend ad hoc Commission meetings and participate in service provider networking and planning meetings.

? Collaborate with the city’s Service Providers by:

o Maintaining communication and working relationships

o Coordinating and maximizing resources

o Improving service delivery

o Promoting community events and programming initiatives

? Review and make recommendations regarding the City of Lowell's allocation of resources affecting the hungry and homeless.

? Mobilize and coordinate resources available to Commission members and organizations they represent, to develop joint projects in response to hunger and homelessness.

? Raise and direct funds to support the projects and priorities of the Commission and accept money, gifts and services for these purposes.

? Encourage input for the creation of specific opportunities for the hungry and homeless to provide their perspectives on their lives and community issues.

? Participate in planning and monitoring activities related to the City’s relationship with the Massachusetts Balance of State Continuum of Care.

? Conduct an annual census to monitor the overall food insecurity and homeless situation in the City.
