Job Description

In 2022, CLA was selected as a host organization for Equal Justice Works’ Housing Justice Program. CLA’s selection marks a crucial victory in CLA’s mission to combat the worsening housing crisis in the Charleston area by providing needed legal services to low-income individuals facing eviction. Through the program, CLA hired an Equal Justice Fellow Attorney who is responsible for expanding Housing Court to Berkeley and Dorchester counties during the two-year fellowship. The Housing Court Coordinator will assist the Equal Justice Fellow Attorney in implementing and carrying out the Housing Courts in Berkeley and Dorchester Counties. This is a great opportunity for anyone considering a public interest career in law or the nonprofit sector.


Primary responsibilities include:

·Attend and facilitate Housing Court at the participating magistrate courts in Berkeley and Dorchester Counties.

·Foster relationships with the participating court clerks’ office to coordinate dockets and obtain necessary pleadings.

·Conduct intakes with tenants appearing at Housing Court and with prospective Housing clients.

·Assist attorneys with case management, client communications, record collection and coordination of client meetings.

·Track cases and statistics and conduct monthly reporting for various grants and projects.

·Maintain case management database and records.

·Provide administrative support to attorneys.

·Participate in community outreach programs and clinics as needed.

·Other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications (must haves):

·Associate degree or equivalent.

·Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

·Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

·Excellent organizational skills: detail orientated; and strong management skills.

·Attend staff and Board meetings, advocate meetings, task forces, and other community meetings when needed tohelp CLA to accomplish its mission.

·Must be able to work on several projects concurrently while meeting deadlines.

·Perform other duties as assigned or requested by the Team.

·Sound judgment in maintaining the confidentiality of client information.

·The ability to work both independently, without close supervision, and collaboratively at varying levels of seniority within and outside of Charleston Legal Access.

Preferred Qualifications (nice to have):

·Previous experience working in a legal setting or a nonprofit.

·Interest in CLA’s mission of expanding access to the justice system.

·Creative thinker and problem-solver with the ability to lead and see projects through to completion and meet tight deadlines.

·Fluency in Spanish preferred.
