Job Description
Position Title: Environmental Services Technician
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Facilities Supervisor
POSITION SUMMARY:

Maintains the cleanliness of the hospital by disinfecting and cleaning in an efficient manner in order to ensure clean, sanitary, and safe environmental conditions for patients, staff, vendors, and visitors. Moves furniture, equipment and supplies throughout the hospital. Follows and observes all infection control, safety precautions, and procedural guidelines.

CLEANING AND DISINFECTION
  • Handles infectious and non-infectious waste.
  • Follows established cleaning methods in performing daily tasks.
  • Cleans the beds and replace with clean linens.
  • Spot cleans carpets and cleans upholstery furniture as needed.
  • Replenishes hand soap, toilet paper, paper towel, seat covers and hand sanitizers throughout the hospital.
  • Collects and transports trash, biohazard and soiled linen to their designated area.
  • Vacuums, sweeps, dusts and wet mops floors.
  • Wash windows, frames, walls, baseboards, ceilings and screens, throughout the facility, including the exterior as needed.
  • Cleans patient room furnishings and bed upon discharge following hospital procedures and standards for check-out.
  • Maintains cleaning equipment in a clean, neat, safe and orderly manner.
  • Performs routine cleaning of patient rooms, offices, and other areas of the hospital in a clean, neat, and sanitary manner.
  • Wash (interior and exterior) wastebaskets and bushel transport containers and replace plastic liners.
  • Maintains cleanliness of facility to ensure a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff, vendors, and visitors.
  • Ensure timely room turns within the basic principles of environmental hygiene and infection prevention.
  • Transports and stocks, clean linen in various areas of the hospital.
  • Cleans and high dusts light fixtures, vents, tops of windows, door frames and other high places using step ladder when necessary.
  • Performs unplanned/unscheduled cleaning functions throughout the day in response to spills, accidents, unexpected debris, etc.
  • Wipes surfaces and disinfects equipment in various areas of the hospital.
  • Wash sinks, faucets, handles and fixtures; maintains the cleanliness of the water coolers, ice machines, and the exterior surfaces of refrigerators (appliances).
  • Uses properly labeled cleaning supplies and tools for each job as instructed.
  • Maintains chemicals and stocks supplies in various units. Submits requests for additional supplies to the Facilities Supervisor.
MOVING REQUESTS (INCLUDING SET-UP AND BREAKDOWN OF EVENTS)
  • Assists in the assembly, disassembly, set-up, arranging and transferring of furnishings and equipment when necessary.
  • Responds to requests for assistance from the Facilities Supervisor/designee when moving, transporting and turning heavy equipment and furnishings.
  • Removes and replaces drapes, curtains, shades and other items throughout the hospital.
OBSERVATION OF SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
  • Practices safety guidelines and proper body mechanics when performing job duties.
  • References Safety Data Sheet (SDS) to safely work with departmental chemicals.
  • Adhere to hospital Infection Prevention practices and standards, including biohazard waste handling, hand washing techniques, and standard or isolated precautions.
  • Reports equipment that is out of order.
  • Uses appropriate equipment for personal and public safety such as wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when appropriate, using caution signs, tapes and cones, etc.
  • Identifies and informs Facilities Supervisor of safety hazards and non-compliance.
  • Understands, complies with and practices the duties and responsibilities described in REHAB’s emergency, safety, infection control and other policies and procedures.
  • Keeps all equipment in good working condition.
  • Exercise the highest level of care in using chemicals or hazardous materials.

  • Keeps self updated on hospital and unit announcements, including updated policies and procedures.
  • Accountable to start and end work based on designated work shift. Demonstrates flexibility with work schedule as needed. When appropriate, obtains approval from the supervisor for changes and/or variances.

  • Assures that all department and hospital policies are followed.

  • Identifies, recommends and implements solutions to issues.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Skills/Experience:
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally to co-workers and staff.
  • Ability to follow simple, on-the-job assignments as instructed by authorized personnel.
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and sanitary practices.
  • Must use judgment in determining the correct usage and necessity of safety equipment as trained by authorized personnel.
  • Ability to safely and effectively perform housekeeping duties.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Skills/Experience:
  • Minimum one (1) year housekeeping experience.

EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, WORK AIDS USED

Housekeeping equipment such as brooms, mops, vacuums, hand sprayers; floor machines such as strippers, wax applicators, burnishers, auto scrubbers and extractor. Cleaning equipment such as dust cloths, dusters, dust pans. Various cleaning, scrub pads and disinfectant supplies and solutions. Utility carts, hand trucks, dollies, stepladders, pallet jack, wet and dry vacuums, various hand tools and supplies. Computer, printer and 2-way radio.
