Job Description

The Engineer, Hot End will be responsible for overseeing the 24-hour, seven days per week operations of one production shift of a glass-making furnace and associated equipment. This position will make sure safe work practices are followed and that all company policies are adhered to. This role will develop float line employees, while also working closely with HR to coordinate the filling of positions and cooperate with the local Union 737.


Key Tasks


Troubleshoot defect sources in Furnace, Tin Bath and Lehr Operations and help direct maintenance efforts

Support internal customer base with technical expertise

• Calculate and execute thickness and width changes in Tin Bath Operations

• Match Tin Bath process to meet production requirements (cutting schedule)

Maintain cost data for all items packaged on site

• Lead Tin Bath PM activities (blow down, chlorination)

• Attend to all timekeeping requirements for all personnel reporting up

Supervise employees assigned to shift

• Ensure that all safe work practices are followed and all company policies are adhered to


Other Requirements:

• Ability to learn and follow procedures while working safely in a manufacturing environment

• Ability to give full attention to what other people are saying to better motivate, develop, and direct people as they work, while identifying the best people for the job

• Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong and apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense

Experience in Batching (material storage, weighing, and mixing

• Furnace operations with knowledge of furnace refractory, including Batch melt control, setting air/fuel ratios, optical quality control, and draw rate control

• Tin Bath Operations, including glass delivery conditions, glass forming theory, top roll speed set up, and reheat setups

• Lehr Operations, including glass annealing theory, and Lehr set up

Experience in SPC (Statistical Process Control)

Experience in 5-S concept
