Duties
- Diagnose cause of trouble and determine whether repair can be accomplished in the field or if shop facilities are necessary.
- Apply understanding of mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of the systems, assemblies, and parts of the vehicles while performing repairs and/or preventative maintenance.
- Perform mechanical maintenance to a variety of gasoline-and diesel-powered heavy construction equipment such as cranes, wheel-and crawler-type tractors, drilling machines, compressors, stationary engines, passenger cars, and/or trucks.
- Operate a diesel tandem tractor with 13-speed transmission and various trailers.
- Use a variety of electronic test equipment to trouble shoot special problems with passenger cars and trucks.
- Interpret technical manuals to install needed components to assure effective operation of complete systems and vehicles according to established specifications.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to lift approximately 50 pounds.
- This position meets the criteria for random drug and alcohol testing under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE ER 690-1-1218.
- Incumbent must be qualified to drive Government vehicles in accordance with Corps of Engineers standards.
- IAW ER 385-1-40, pre-employment and position change physicals are required. Additionally, annual or biennial medical screenings are required with the frequency of screening determined by driving duty frequency.
- Required to observe established safe working procedures; and, wear appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions.
- Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 7412, Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified Safety-Sensitive Under the DOT, Federal Highway Administration Rules on Drug and Alcohol Testing.
- Must have or be able to obtain a Class A Commercials Driver's License.
Qualifications
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. I am skilled in the complete overhaul of engine and hydraulic systems. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
- Physical Efforts: The employee works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. The employee frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds or puts forth similar strenuous effort while standing, lying, or sitting. The employee often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of others or lifting devices.
- Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. Inside work is in a well-lighted, heated, and vented garage building. Outside work may be performed adjacent to the garage building or in the field. Field assignments involve exposure to temperature extremes common to the normal construction season, and to generally unfavorable working conditions inasmuch as most heavy equipment repair in the field is in connection with ditching, levee building, etc. The nature of the work is dirty, greasy, and noisy. The use of hand tools in cramped areas and while in awkward body positions (bending, prone, or reaching) subjects the worker to possible cuts and bruises to hands and arms. There is limited exposure to drowning from falls over the side of boats or from accidents while underway.
