About WSDOT
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure that people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is eager to hire multiple experienced mechanics who wants to utilize their skills to work on a variety of motor vehicles and highway maintenance equipment. The permanent duty station for these positions will be located in Seattle, but will be temporarily assigned to our maintenance shops throughout Northwest Region at our Bellingham, Mount Vernon, Bellevue, and Kent locations. We are looking for mechanics to perform preventative maintenance, inspection, and other services on all inventoried equipment including passenger vehicles, dump trucks, heavy equipment, and a variety of highway maintenance equipment. This position is critical in ensuring that equipment is ready to roll to keep our highways free of hazards and open to the traveling public year-round. The successful candidate appointed to this unique position will serve a vital role in support of WSDOT’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic will:
  • Fabricate, weld, and install additional equipment to vehicles.
  • Safely operate welders, drill press, grinder, press, hoist, air tools, jacks and other shop equipment.
  • Maneuver in, on, around and under various pieces of equipment for the purpose of servicing, diagnostic testing, and repairing in an efficient manner.
  • Detect and repair safety items on equipment to reduce field down time and extend the service life of equipment used by WSDOT.
  • Oversee work, share knowledge and mentor Equipment Technician 3 in-training personnel.
  • Troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair gas and diesel engines, transmissions, electrical & electronic systems, brakes, hydraulic systems, suspensions, steering and fuel systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspection, and correction of major and minor repairs on all WSDOT equipment, including all types of light and heavy equipment used in highway maintenance and construction.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Abide by all safety policies and procedures.
  • Repair and maintain steering and suspension systems; diagnoses and repairs hydraulic and air brake systems including anti-lock brake systems; designs, diagnoses, repairs, and installs hydraulic systems.
  • Keep shop safe, clean, and orderly.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • One (1) year of experience as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy duty equipment.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey-level mechanic; OR
  • Journey-Level standing as a heavy equipment mechanic demonstrated by the completion of a recognized apprenticeship; OR
  • Journey-Level standing as recognized by a labor union; OR

In addition to:
  • Ability to stand stationary for periods up to 30 minutes at a time and alternate between standing and walking up to long periods per work shift.
  • Experience operating computerized diagnostic testing equipment, welders, drill presses, hoists, air tools, and jacks.
  • Ability to travel throughout the region to other equipment facilities.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in the written form.
  • Ability to manipulate up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • High School Diploma
  • Experience reading and understanding equipment manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Computer skills with the ability to operate Microsoft Office Suite and the M5 Fleet Equipment Management System.
  • Current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with “N” and Air Brake endorsements, no automatic transmission restriction and DOT medical certification or the ability to obtain with six months of employment.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Current Class A Commercial Driver’s License with “N” and Air Brake endorsements, no automatic transmission restriction and DOT medical certification.
  • Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment, light vehicles and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding/fabrication.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County and 10% Assignment Pay.

  • The official duty station for these positions will be located in Seattle, but this recruitment will be used to temporarily fill multiple positions throughout the Northwest Region, which includes Bellingham, Mount Vernon, Bellevue, and Kent, and will be determined based on candidate preference and overall business needs.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
  • Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Compliance with this mandate is a condition of employment with WSDOT.
