Job Description

A Heavy Equipment Operator works to assist with the street’s maintenance activities of the Public Works Department. In this position, you will be driving a sanitation truck to properly collect and dispose of garbage according to SC DHEC regulations. The position includes operating a variety of heavy and light equipment including, but not limited to, sanitation trucks, front-end loader, dump truck, trash loader, street sweeper, backhoe, bush hog, lawn mower, and tractor. This position is an important role within the Public Work’s team that assists in maintaining the City streets and the City’s residents’ properties. As the Heavy Equipment Operator, you would be driving the sanitation truck in City neighborhoods and to the transfer station or designated area to haul collected rubbish. This work involves maintaining equipment, as needed, including general maintenance on all vehicles.

As a member of the Public Work’s team, you could also be assisting other areas of the department, including, but not limited to: storm drain maintenance, sidewalk maintenance, construction of driveways, edging sidewalks and curbs, ditch maintenance, picking up leaves and limbs, hauling gravel and dirt, storm clean-up, and general cleaning of parking lots and all rights of way.

Regular Schedule: Monday – Friday from 7am-3pm

Requirements:

  • Must be able to comprehend oral and written instructions and have knowledge of (or ability to quickly learn) routine safety practices, and truck operation (compactor, hydraulics, etc.)
  • Valid South Carolina Commercial driver’s license - Class “B”
  • Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies as necessary
  • Must be able to carry and/or lift up to 50lbs
  • High school diploma or GED

Fringe Benefits:

  • Accrue two weeks of sick leave annually starting from date of hire
  • 11 holidays per year + 1 annual floating birthday
  • From date of hire, accrue two weeks of vacation time annually up to 2 years of service; then accruals increase to three weeks; at 15 years of service, accruals increase to four weeks.

Hourly Pay Rate: $17.86 - $19.56/hour
