Job Description

Duties

Serves as a Medication Technician in a Federal Bureau of Prisons Institution.

Responsible for the administration and distribution of medication to inmates in various locations, including the Health Services Unit, Special Housing Units, or other designated areas within the institution.

Administers medications to include but not limited to Oral, Topical, Nebulized, Meter Dose Inhaler, and Insulin, in a manner consistent with nationally recognized safe medical practices, to include accurate identification of the patient, medication, dosage, time, and route.

Uses Medication Administration Record to document all medications administered at the time of administration via paper or electronic record.

Reports and records adverse medication reactions and seeks immediate medical assistance for inmates with severe adverse medication reactions.

Assists Pharmacist or other appropriate staff member in a variety of pharmacy related activities, including, but not limited to, entry of physician orders into a computerized pharmacy information system, preparation of medications for Pharmacist review, preparation of medication administration records, storage and inventory of pharmacy supplies, etc.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements:

Education:

GL-05: A four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.

GL-06: One year of graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GL-05 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.

OR

Experience:

GL-05 and GL-06: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is directly related experience that includes support duties to medical or health personnel. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:

GL-05:

  • Experience in explaining medication instructions to patients.
  • Experience in ordering and maintaining medical supplies and equipment.
  • Experience in assisting in maintaining sanitation of a medication administration area adhering to infection control policies and procedures as applicable.

GL-06:

  • Experience in administering medications (i.e. sublingual, buccal, eye, ear, nasal, topical, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intravenous).
  • Experience in maintaining accurate inventories of all needles, syringes and controlled substances.
  • Experience in reporting and recording adverse medication reactions.
  • Experience in preparing medications for Pharmacist review and placing automated medication orders.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience:

GL-05 only: Have a combination of education and experience. This experience must have equipped you with the qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position.

AND

Selective Placement Factor:

GL-05 and GL-06: Applicants applying for this position MUST possess the following Selective Factor. In the event you do not possess the Selective Factor, you will be found ineligible for the position.

  • This position requires the knowledge gained through one or more of the following: a medication administration training program, a certified nursing assistant or medical assistant program which included instruction on medication administration, certified pharmacy technician program, vocational nursing program, or paramedic training program. Evidence of program completion is required. The applicant is required to successfully demonstrate initial competence to administer medications, and on-going competence in administration of medications as required. If the applicant is a licensed vocational nurse, emergency medical technician (EMT- Basic, Intermediate, Advanced), or certified pharmacy technician state licensure or certification (as appropriate) must be maintained.

Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques," three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
