Job Description

Duties

Specific duties include but are not limited to:
This position provides clinical, administrative, technical, and direct patient care support. In this capacity, the incumbent must be skillful and flexible in establishing goals and setting priorities due to the fluctuating needs of the clinical staff. Specific responsibilities include:
Safely and correctly performs venous puncture to obtain a blood specimen from the patient after clearly explaining the procedure to the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient;
Safely and correctly places intravenous catheter into a peripheral vein after clearly explaining the procedure to the patient in a manner appropriate to that specific patient;
Attaches a patient to an EKG machine and performs a twelve lead EKG reading. Retrieves old EKG's using the MAC VU System;
At the direction of the RN, correctly applies a nasal cannula to deliver oxygen, a venturi mask, and an oxygen mask;
Takes vital signs and notifies the physician or nurse if any are abnormal;
Performs pulse oximetry;
Safely escorts patients to critical care areas;
Competently assesses oxygen tanks at the beginning of each shift for oxygen availability;
Delivers vital specimens to appropriate laboratories in the absence of other personnel so designated for this function;
Identifies a patient in acute distress and rapidly notifies the appropriate licensed practitioner;
Assists in the application of various types of restraint devices;
Cleans and returns equipment to appropriate location and reports needs for equipment repair to the appropriate person;
Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 8pm, 7:30pm -8am, 11:30am -1200am Rotating weekends/ holidays.

Physical Requirements: The work involves periods of prolonged extensive or considerable standing/walking or sitting. Lifts. positions, pushes. and/or transfers patients. Lifts supplies/equipment. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling. and crouching. These statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skill required of personnel so classified.
Work Environment: The work environment involves regular and recurring exposure to infections and contagious diseases, as well as working with infectious substances, irritant reagents, and potentially. emotionally disturbed patients. The incumbent is required to follow infection control policies relating to the use of standard precautions and posted isolation practices. The policies may require the wearing of require special Personal Protective Equipment (eye and face protection, mask, lab coat, gown, hat, shoe covers, and sterile and non-sterile gloves) with occasional exposure to peroxyacetic acid, exposure to x-rays, exposure to blood and body fluids which are often infectious.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-6: Must possess at least (1) one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) that required the application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position. Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to: providing direct patient care; providing assistance while observing for signs of potential complications to patients; Examples of specialized experience include (but are not limited to): Skill of Monitoring EKGs of patients on telemetry at Central Station site; identifies arrhythmias and changes in EIG rhythms ; trouble-shoots machines, checks electrode attachments, contacts medical personnel, and calls codes; verifies alarm setting and performs alarm parameter adjustments with RN; documents EKG changes in patient's heart rhythm/rate in medical record; provides telemetry monitor, identify proper lead placement, and attaches electrodes. and providing general clerical/administrative support coordination work in a medical unit.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
