Who we are: Founded in 2012, the Episcopal School of Los Angeles is an independent, co-ed, college-preparatory day school serving grades six through twelve. Forty percent of our students’ tuition expenses is made possible through donor-funded scholarships. This is a nearly unparalleled commitment in the L.A. independent school landscape, which allows ESLA to recruit and enroll an uncommonly diverse student body that reflects the vibrant character of our city—bright, dedicated students from all walks of life. Our model is founded upon the belief that the best educational tool for any young person is the collaboration and camaraderie of peers from different backgrounds—peers who have stories and perspectives to share, the stuff of life that simply cannot be gleaned from a textbook. For further information about the school, please visit es-la.com. Who we’re looking for: ESLA is seeking a Health and Yoga teacher to lead our health and physical education program in grades 6-12. This teacher will design a health curriculum to be delivered by colleagues with relevant expertise in the areas of nutrition, sexual health, drug education, harm reduction, and mental health. They will also teach courses on modes of exercise that students can use over their lifetime and that deepen connections among the mind, heart, and body. We value exposing our students to a range of disciplines yet also recognize the benefits of deep expertise when it comes to teaching young people. We are, therefore, open to a candidate who could teach some combination of yoga, dance, Zumba, pilates, tai chi, martial arts, cardio and strength training, or other studio or mat-based practices. Most importantly, we seek someone joyful and passionate about their skills, and desires to share them with curious young people who want to know not only the ‘how’ but the ‘why’. The ideal candidate has... ● A coherent vision for health education and student well-being that is informed by current science and best practices and has expertise in at least one area of the health curriculum ● Robust, current, and expanding knowledge of two or more disciplines such as yoga, dance, tai chi, pilates, Zumba, martial arts, cardio, and strength training, or other studio or mat-based practices ● A confident, dynamic approach to teaching that invites both younger and older students to explore new forms of fitness and discover what works for them ● A commitment to their own meditation, mindfulness, or embodiment practice, and a willingness to share that practice in the service of student well-being and self-understanding ● The ability to lead students in both the physical practice as well as instruct students regarding the origins and purposes of their discipline ● A temperament that will support both serious student-athletes and students who are hesitant about physical fitness ● Experience in developing and practicing a joyful, relational, and committed classroom culture ● A desire to build a health program with other professionals that align with the best science and deepest wisdom in an age when sharp delineations between body and mind are disappearing and new understandings of health and wholeness are emerging ● Demonstrated success in meeting the needs of an ethnically, culturally, socioeconomically, and linguistically diverse student body About the Department: The ESLA Physical Education Department is expanding to include a more robust approach to health and well-being. Building on a school culture that values sport for the way it invites us to play, collaborate, and develop discipline, we now seek to add health education and fitness programs that will benefit our students over their lifetime. Engaging the expertise of colleagues from across the school, the new health curriculum will bring together physical fitness, nutrition, sexual health, drug education, and harm reduction, and mental health education into a coherent program to support the well-being of our students. Our goal is and continues to be to form young people who are confident enough to make the best decisions for themselves and to seek help when they need it. By the end of their time at ESLA, students will: ● Find fitness practices that give them joy and can be used throughout their life ● Have accurate and reliable knowledge about the complex health-related issues and decisions that influence our ability to be fulfilled ● See and experience the body as a site of genuine self-knowledge, worthy of our attention and care ● Know the joy of working and playing together Responsibilities: ● Teach 5 or more sections ● Preparation of course materials and assessments ● Participate in an after-school program two days a week (sports, clubs, performing arts, academic support, etc.) ● Serve as an advisor to a small group of students ● Attend regular community gatherings, including, but not limited to, meetings, Chapel, lunch, and major feast days Requirements: All or most of the following: ● Commensurate training and/or certification in one’s chosen discipline/s; ● A desire to work in a creative, collaborative, innovative environment ● Strong leadership and organizational skills ● Experience working with young people in grades 6-12 Compensation and Benefits: ● Salary is competitive with other area independent schools. ● Full medical, dental, and vision benefits, plus 401(k) with employer match. ● Lunch is freshly prepared and shared family-style by faculty and students each day. ● Beyond competitive pay and benefits, faculty enjoy working in a student-centered, collaborative, and joyful learning community. To Apply: Please send a cover letter and the following information with the subject line “Studio Fitness Teacher” to [email protected]. ● Résumé ● A written statement responding to the following question: * Describe the ideal health education curriculum that would address the knowledge, and self-awareness necessary for young people to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. What resources or philosophies would guide your efforts? What challenges or barriers would you anticipate? And what would make such a program successful?
