Hawai’i Pacific University (HPU) seeks an experienced leader to serve as its Women’s Head Basketball Coach modeling the university cultural values of pono, kuleana, and aloha. HPU is a private, not-for-profit institution with an enrollment of over 4,000 undergraduates and 500 graduate students coming from all 50 United States and its territories and nearly 65 countries. Founded in 1965, HPU is Hawai’I’s largest private university with its core campus in the heart of Honolulu’s business district. HPU’s investment in the urban student experience translates to greater hands-on experiences for students, expanded interdisciplinary collaboration between colleges and programs, and deeper engagement with the community of Honolulu and the state of Hawai’i. Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- 3 years of basketball coaching experience at intercollegiate level with successful recruiting and a competitive winning record.
- Demonstrated commitment to rules/policy compliance and a commitment to student-athlete success both academically and athletically and overall student-athlete well-being.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year collegiate institution.
Desired Qualifications:
- Previous NCAA DII experience.
- Experience with program administration at the intercollegiate NCAA level.
- 5+ years of successful coaching and recruiting experience.
- Experience taking teams to post season championships.
- Master’s Degree.
- Create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
- Able to work all shifts and extended hours including standard university business hours, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.
- This position may be considered an essential position with report to work obligations depending on the type of emergency, campus closure, or evacuation.
- Attend to details to effectively act on policies necessary and appropriate to HPU Athletics, including: Sports Medicine Handbook, HPU Athletics Policies and Procedures Manual, HPU Compliance Manual, and the Student-Athlete Handbook. Attend to details to effectively act on policies necessary and appropriate for managing NCAA and PacWest Conference related compliance.
- Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position. This includes a valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured.
- Regular and reliable attendance for office hours and HPU events.
- Meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation is not available for this position.
- This position will be require driving responsibility for an HPU vehicle. Due to driving responsibilities, you must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with HPU’s Vehicle Driving policy.
- Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU’s winter break and other holidays, if necessary.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
1. Develop and administer a successful women’s basketball sports program (40%)
- Keeping abreast and ensuring compliance with the Pacific West Conference and NCAA regulations while maintaining highest ethical standards of conduct.
- Recruiting and developing student-athletes who will thrive at HPU and successfully represent the institution academically and athletically.
- Administering sports program budget in line with the guidelines provided by the Athletics Department and the Office of Chief Financial Officer.
- Making travel arrangements for both on and off-island travel.
- Attending and coaching all games and practices.
- Coordinating procurement of uniforms and equipment.
- Supervising assistant coaches and other program personnel.
- Scheduling and organizing practice and contests in accordance with applicable Pacific West Conference and NCAA regulations.
2. Monitor and foster student-athletes’ well-being and academic success (35%)
- Ensuring positive student-athlete experience for all athletes in the program.
- Monitoring student-athletes’ academic progress in collaboration with the Athletics Academic Advisor.
- Fostering student-athletes’ well-being through provision of a safe and a non-discriminatory environment.
- Developing and instituting mandatory or voluntary study programs for student-athletes.
3. Fundraising and Community Service Efforts (10%)
- Organize and participate in community service events each year.
- In conjunction with the University Relations Department, effectively organize and administer a robust fundraising schedule in a timely and efficient way.
- Organize and engage in community engagement events each year.
4. Support operations of the HPU Athletics Department (10%)
- Assist and serve on committees and sub-committees as needed.
- Actively participate in Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) appointments and follow up communications on a regular basis.
- Participate in department meetings and events.
- Assist with other sports event management as needed and assigned.
5. Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)
- Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
- Assists with seasonal peaks.
