Job Description
Eastern Oregon University (EOU) – Oregon’s Rural University! has a fantastic opportunity for a career professional as Head Men’s Basketball Coach in the Athletics Department. The Men’s Basketball Coach is a full-time, 12-month position that reports directly to the Athletic Director of EOU.
The Head Men’s Basketball Coach leads and is responsible for all aspects of EOU’s Men’s Basketball program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to recruitment, retention, and graduating of student-athletes; academic supervision, fundraising for both the Men’s Basketball program and the athletic department, budget management, supervising assistant coaches, developing and managing a competitive schedule, and organizing and conducting all practices.
Intercollegiate athletics are integral to the overall educational experience at Eastern Oregon University. The Head Basketball Coach will help fulfill the department’s mission, goals, and objectives. The Department of Athletics promotes core values that inspire academic excellence, athletic triumph, and community engagement through meaningful relationships and opportunities.

(5) Encourage department innovation for enhanced success, and cultivate a mindset for growth, professional development, work-life integration, and department financial vitality.
(6) Promote community engagement and student-athlete character development through respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
(7) Strictly adhere to the highest level of fiscal control and full compliance with all governing associations with transparency and integrity.

Responsibilities
Recruiting
  • Establish and develop positive relationships with appreciate high school and junior college officials in order to recruit prospective student-athletes. A focus should be placed on the Eastern Oregon 10 county region and the state of Oregon in order to promote the university mission.
  • Oversee the distribution of any athletic grant in aid (scholarship) offers to prospective student-athletes and ensuring the offer is within the total amount available and appropriately scale financial offerings to match the athletic academic talent.
  • Act as the primary recruiter for the men’s basketball program.
  • Successfully research, scout, evaluate, and contact prospective student-athletes while operating within the guidelines of the department, institution, and NAIA at all times.


Training
  • Develop instructional opportunities to improve skills based on fundamentals of activity and team success.
  • Design, conduct, and monitor all athletically related activities per NAIA, Cascade Conference, and Institutional regulations regarding competition, practice, and conditioning opportunities.
  • Provide leadership during competition, practice, and conditioning sessions to facilitate proper technique and attitudes towards each other, opponents, and the athletic department.
  • Evaluate student-athletes performance in competition, practice, and conditioning situations in order to identify strengths and areas of improvement.
  • Incorporate specific learning opportunities for all positions associated with the team and communicate with all members of the coaching staff.

Academics/Conduct
  • Ensure that 100 of their student-athletes complete the NAIA Champions of character/drug education courses each academic year.
  • Understand and communicate all university academic policy, as well as NAIA eligibility requirements to student-athletes.
  • Develop and submit written team rules and regulations regarding conduct and expectations. Develop a process and plan to implement the NAIA Champions of Character into the overall program.
  • Actively assist in the MAPP program within the department.
  • Primarily recruit academically prepared student-athletes that meet/exceed admission standards (at least 90 ). Strive to achieve a cumulative team GPA each term of 3.0 or greater.
  • Oversee academic progress of student-athletes in order to achieve satisfactory progress towards graduation and eligibility.

Competitions
  • Manage team-related game day activities including practices, pre and postgame meals, travel, lodging, and any related functions.
  • Act as primary liaison to event staff including sports information, facility manager, equipment manager, ticket operations, and compliance personnel.
  • Develop sound game plans and strategies for the team in preparation for competitions.
  • Communicate with game officials in a manner that does not misrepresent or compromise the program, department, and/or University.
  • Coordinate with Athletic Department staff needs for practice and competitions (gym space, etc.). Develop and submit for approval the proposed competition schedule in compliance with institutional and NAIA policy.
  • During the competition, make tactical and strategic adjustments to improve the chance of athletic success.

Public relation/Fundraising
  • Participate in public relations activities as approved by taking part in interviews with print, radio, or television media.
  • Be actively engaged in a civic organization of your choice.
  • Take an active role in any general Booster Club and/or department activities intended to secure resources for the department.
  • Develop and manage sports camps and clinics following NAIA and University policy and procedures. Represent the university at professional, civic, booster, or alumni events as requested. Develop and submit for approval any team fundraising activities in accordance with department policy.

Administrative Duties
  • Manage any post-season awards following all department, university, and NAIA policies.
  • Prepare and submit all necessary paperwork related to business affairs in a timely fashion.
  • Monitor expenditures and per diem disbursements for compliance with department, university, and NAIA policies.
  • Manage the purchase of apparel and equipment within the department’s policies and procedures. Monitor the condition of all equipment and assist the equipment manager with the proper care, repair, and replacement when necessary.
  • Assist with the development of overall facility schedules as it relates to competitions, practice, visiting teams, and camps.
  • Provide itineraries for all individual and team travel prior to departure.
  • Provide oversight for individual sports budget with assistance by department Business Coordinator.
  • Cooperate with all other coaches and staff in order to further enhance the operations of the entire department and university.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Five (5) years of demonstrated success in building a successful basketball program at the collegiate or varsity high school level.
  • NAIA Champions of Character Coaching Course completed.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • First Aid/CPR Certified or the ability to obtain.
  • Mental Health First Aid Training or the ability to obtain.
  • Knowledge of NAIA rules and regulations.
  • In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Eastern Oregon University will not sponsor applicants for employment visas.
  • Current and Valid Drivers license.
  • Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar for employment.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Coaching, Athletic Administration, Business, Education, or closely related field.
  • It is an expectation that you conduct yourself with the highest level of professionalism, character, and integrity at all times. Competency with NAIA, Cascade Conference, and EOU policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in Coaching, Athletic Administration, Business, Education or closely related field.
