Description

Position Summary:

The purpose of this position is to perform responsible and independent work in support of the City’s communications and marketing plan and develop print and digital creative to support and expand the City’s brand, outreach, and communications programs. This position is responsible for all design needs for the City performing highly skilled work and providing detailed art direction for the Media division. This position supports the Media division to ensure brand consistency across all touch points.


Position Scope:

  • Completes projects by coordinating with outside agencies, art services, and printers.
  • Artistic development of all phases of publication, collateral and advertising materials as needed.
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending design workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Possess the ability to problem solve and work as a team or independently to achieve goal-driven projects and campaigns.
  • Assists in the administration of the City’s strategic communications plan including working with all City departments to keep the public informed of departmental programs, events, accomplishments, and activities.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports related to program activities.
  • Creates logos and branding for programs, eventsin accordance with the City’s brand guidelines.
  • Advises and assists staff in various concepts, types of display, and product reproduction methods.
  • Assists with the development of social media content, graphics, and campaigns for the City.
  • Ensures compliance with City’s brand standards across all collateral.
  • Plans, designs, reviews, and coordinates the production of City publications, including brochures, flyers, posters, pamphlets, newsletters, magazines and reports, to include designing the City’s quarterly magazine, Sunny Isles Beach Live and Play, the City’s monthly newsletter, Islander, and the City’s yearly desktop calendar from concept to final art.
  • Maintains a library of electronic graphic art, photography, and video files.
  • Obtains approval of concepts by submitting layout for approval and prepares final layout and mockups.
  • Performs press checks, proofing, and color correction.
  • Designs graphics for vehicle wraps, banners, signs, and other collateral as requested.
  • Prepares graphics for planning related displays and presentations to illustrate and support studies and programs.
  • Creates artwork for print and web using various desktop publishing software and prepares freehand or computer-generated illustrations.
  • Prepares work to be accomplished by gathering information and materials; plans concepts by studying information and materials; and illustrates concept by designing rough layout of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and style, and related aesthetic concepts.
  • Consults with project managers on concepts, copy, and layout.
  • Works closely with City departments to support and increase the City’s brand.
  • Conducts research of new features and tools for enhancing the City’s options across both print and digital media.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Possess strong design and conceptual skills, including knowledge of typography and illustration techniques.
  • Ability to conduct research, organize, analyze, prepare and present technical information and design concepts for collaboration and approvals.
  • Ability to maintain awareness of current events that may impact implementation of City policies and public information programs.
  • Skilled in information design and architecture, including layout and design for web pages and social media.
  • Highly proficient in Graphic Design utilizing Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • Knowledge of ADA Compliance across digital and print media in accordance with WCAG 2.0 requirements and industry standards and best practices.Ability to make publications, documents, forms, images, videos, and other forms of media accessible to all in compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Knowledge of electronic communications, including web publishing, digital newsletters, social media, and other online communications.
  • Proficiency on Apple platforms and equipment.
  • Able to multi-task and deliver on tight deadlines when required.
  • Complete knowledge of pre-press and printing process required; including but not limited to, stock, inks, calibration, color balancing, color profiling, proofing, scanning, and preparing files for final production using industry-standard (pdf workflow).
  • Knowledge of copy editing and writers’ marks for print publication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, co-workers/team members, elected officials, local media, community members, and the general public.
  • Experience with textiles, fabrication, and manufacturing processes a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience in photo editing and manipulation.
  • Experience and understanding of environmental design a plus.
  • Knowledge of editorial design and creating multi-page documents required.

Minimum Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the graphic design field, preferably in a government/municipality environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Marketing, Advertising, or related field.

Certifications and/or Licenses:

  • AIGA Membership preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License

Applicant must submit a copy or a link of their portfolio demonstrating their creative ability and experience.


Additional Information:

  • There is a one-year probationary period.
  • It is the responsibility of the incumbent to maintain their licenses and/or certifications as a job requirement.
