Job Description

The graphic designer selected for this position will have the ability to create graphics that capture the attention of those who see them and communicate the right message. For this, the candidate will need to have a creative flair and a strong ability to translate requirements and data into design. If you can communicate well and work methodically as part of a team, we’d like to meet you.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Test graphics across various media
  • Ensure final graphics and layouts are visually appealing and on-brand
  • Lead the creation and execution of multi-channel marketing strategies that increase overall City of Richmond awareness, drive new end-users to the City, and help achieve growth and awareness objectives
  • Meet with internal clients to gain an understanding of what they want their proposed communications to look like; Create or incorporate illustrations, pictures, and designs to reflect the desired theme and tone of the communications
  • Revise designs after feedback
  • Use the appropriate colors and layouts for each graphic
  • Develop illustrations, logos, and other designs using software or by hand
  • Prepare rough drafts and present ideas
  • Design web pages, brochures, logos, signs, books, magazine covers, annual reports, advertisements, and other communication materials
  • Conceptualize visuals based on requirements
  • Study design briefs and determine requirements
  • Work with communications team and stakeholders to produce final design

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to work methodically and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Familiarity with design software and technologies (such as the full Adobe Creative Suite to InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop)
  • A strong portfolio of illustrations or other graphics
  • A keen eye for aesthetics and details
  • Proven graphic designing experience
Education and Experience:
  • Prior experience as a lead graphic designer for a large organization
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Design, Fine Arts, or related field is a plus
