JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Grant Writer
DEPARTMENT: Contracted – 3 Year contract term
REPORTS TO: Community Development Director/Planner
LOCATION: Tribal Administration Watersmeet, MI
SALARY: $65,000-$78,000 annually (including Benefit Package)
DESCRIPTION:
The Grant Writer will be under the day-to-day supervision of the Tribal Planner. The
individual selected will be primarily responsible for researching, compiling and
submission of grant applications made available to the Tribal government and Tribal
community through federal, state, and private funding sources. The successful candidate
will also be responsible for providing technical grant writing and administration assistance
to program directors and/or department heads, but in no event shall the duties and
responsibilities of the Grant Writer take the place of duties and responsibilities of a
program director for securing and administration of any grant where dollars are typically
accessed and traditionally used to the fund operation of the department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop a base grant submission packet to serve as a foundation for all
grant submissions.
- Develop or revise Grant Submission Procedures to include application development
guidelines, budget review, and maintenance procedures for approval of the Tribal
Planner and ultimately the Tribal Council.
- Research and keep a calendar of grant opportunities available through federal,
state, and private funding sources.
- Work directly with Tribal Community and Economic Development sectors to
enhance strategic planning initiatives involving economic and workforce
development.
- Coordinate with Tribal Strategic Planning stakeholders to develop communication
plans with state and federal Small Business Administrations (SBAs), Economic
Development Corporations (EDCs), the Michigan Department of Natural
Resources (MDNR), the State Department of Agriculture (MDARD), the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), United
States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Indian Health Service (HIS) and other
entities that provide opportunities that might advance the tribe’s economic goals.
- Discuss ideas and conduct factual research, in consultation with, interested program
directors or department heads and assist them to organize the information following
the guidelines of any Request for Proposal (RFP), or grant solicitation not typically
a funding source for the operation of the department.
- Ensure that applications are submitted using the required means of submission
to the responsible authority within the required deadline period.
- Assist program directors and/or department heads in conducting research and
needs assessments to learn about the availability of grants from federal, state,
and private funding sources.
- Assist program directors and/or department heads compile factual and
statistical information that may be needed to provide sufficient
documentation for any grant proposal developed for submission.
- Attend training seminars or meetings that affect a particular grant or program
proposal.
- Periodically assist program directors and/or department heads with
administration of grant programs where reporting requirements are not a typical
source of funding for the department and are unusually cumbersome or difficult.
- Disseminate, by any means required, information about grants, applications or
programs, to program directors and/or department heads or the Tribal community
as a whole.
- Complete on average one (1) grant application a month.
- Coordinate and participate in the annual preparation of a community
development planning document.
- Design and implement grant writing workshop or provide one-on-one training to
program directors, department heads or community boards, committees, and
community members.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a proven and successful grant writer.
- Must possess an Associate’s degree. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Must have knowledge of technical requirements of grant writing process such as
RFP formats, scoring systems, review panels, submission programs/software
necessary to receive federal, state, and private dollars.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication, organizational and leadership
skills.
- Must be able to write clearly, concisely, and persuasively.
- Must be able to work under pressure often juggling multiple projects with
multiple deadlines simultaneously.
- Must be computer literate and have experience with software programs such as
Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.
- Must be willing to travel for meetings, workshops, seminars, etc.
- Experience working with Native Americans, or other culturally diverse or
economically disadvantaged populations desired.
- Must have a valid driver's license and adequate automobile insurance coverage.
