Position Summary
The Nutrition Program at the University of the Incarnate Word is seeking graduate students to apply for the Graduate Laboratory/Teaching Assistant (TA). The Graduate Laboratory/Teaching Assistant (TA) in the Nutrition Program is responsible for the supervision of all laboratory (Food Laboratory and Nutrition Laboratory) activities and assists in teaching specific Nutrition courses. The TA is responsible for maintaining a safe, instructive atmosphere in the laboratory and following instructions given by the course professor. The TA follows all safety guidelines in the laboratory and enforces these guidelines for all students in the laboratory. TAs are generally expected to procure materials for labs, set up labs, assist during labs, take down labs, and any other duties assigned by the course professor/instructor. TAs are also responsible for grading laboratory reports and assignments. TAs have primary responsibility for laboratory upkeep/maintenance and inventory and ensure that all the materials are stored properly and areas are clean before leaving the laboratory. Other responsibilities may include tutoring, proctoring exams, procuring/acquiring materials for specific projects, and assisting professors. The Nutrition Program has multiple TA positions therefore teamwork and communication are essential attributes for the position.

This is a student position open to current UIW graduate students.

Essential Functions
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Enforces Nutrition Department laboratory safety conduct/guidelines;
  • Assist professors/instructors in other functions such as proctoring exams, tutoring students, and working on special projects (related to research or UIW events);
  • Procure materials for the Nutrition and Food labs;
  • Upkeep and maintenance of Nutrition and Food labs;
  • Maintain inventory of the Food Laboratory and Nutrition Laboratory;
  • Grade lab reports and assignments as assigned by professors/instructors;
  • Store materials after labs;
  • Set up lab, assist during lab, and take-down lab;

  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;



Required Education
  • Current UIW student enrolled in the Nutrition graduate program in good academic standing with the University and enrolled in at least six hours in the semester in which the appointment occurs;

Required Work Experience
Completion of some of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) courses

Preferred Qualifications
  • Related experience preferred
  • Completion of 6 hours of graduate work preferred


Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations

Work Hours
  • Students are expected to meet with the faculty member(s)at least once a week;
  • GA’s are anticipated to work schedule assigned by the professor/instructor – 10 hours per week; 150 hours per semester;
  • Students are expected to start work one week prior to the start of classes and work the week after final examinations each semester.


Physical Demands
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds.
