WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The GIS Stewardship Intern will assist The Nature Conservancy’s Sandhills staff in updating GIS layers relating to our stewardship and fire program and creating an ArcGIS.com based web App. This work will make future projects easier by having a robust GIS library of TNC properties in detail. Some field work will be necessary to collect and ground truth data needed for accurate GIS layers. This position will focus on three key areas: updating GIS layers, creating an ArcGis.com based web App, and creating an invasive species geodatabase on TNC preserves to help guide future management.

This position may require working in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.

The internship is based in Southern Pines, NC. Housing may be provided. The GIS Stewardship intern will be expected to follow TNC SOPs.

The GIS Stewardship Intern assists on a wide variety of GIS tasks that support the work of the Sandhills office, primarily the stewardship and fire program of The Nature Conservancy (TNC). Potential candidates must be self-starters who will take initiative and work with little supervision.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Must have valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
  • Familiarity with creating an ArcGIS.com based web App.
  • High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR).
  • Working knowledge of advanced principles of GIS, proficiency using ArcPro software.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Familiarity in data collection using GPS or Apps such as Avenza.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Some experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
